South Australia’s parliament has voted to protect the government and public servants from defamation and other civil lawsuits that could arise from the publishing of information under the state’s renewed open government push. The new immunity laws protect those acting for the government against defamation and breach of confidence liability, by recognising that they are not “the author or originator of information”. It does not affect the legal liability of the creator a document’s content. Employment and Information Economy Minister, Gail Gago, told state parliament the new laws aimed to “enable the quick release of information without the need for elaborate vetting of each individual document”.

We picked New Zealand’s fire alert SMS data as our open dataset of the week two weeks ago because of its potential to create a real-time geographical alert system. It was with great excitement, then, that someone emailed us to say that such as a system has been built by private developers using this data. “There are a number of limitations with how the fire data feed is presented at present, but nevertheless we’ve managed to setup a free public fire alert service based off it,” explained Clint Van Marrewijk, Managing Director of ThunderMaps. “We thought it of value from the public’s point of view, and no one had built it,” he added in a follow up interview. “If you’re a farmer you need to know if there’s been a scrub fire nearby so that you can change your behaviour.

The United Nations has launched a web page aggregating open data on the Ebola crisis from international organisations, governments and civil society groups. The page features an interactive map of the worst-affected areas, a graph of the number of cases and deaths since August, and the main figures for tracking responses to the outbreak. It also has 44 datasets for developers to build new tools. The Ebola crisis page is hosted on the UN’s humanitarian open data web site, Humanitarian Data Exchange (HDX). Although open data sounds like a big project, the team behind the page has shown that you can start small. Work on the page started by simply linking to existing sites with relevant data, like OpenStreetMap and UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

In celebration of International GIS Day, Pierce County is launching a free new site that makes it easy to research census data, zoning, local parks, property parcels, and more! The new Open Geospatial Data Portal makes the County’s GIS data widely available to the public. Users can choose from categories such as census data or places of interest, search for specific topics, filter for desired data, and view data on the interactive map. Best of all, this data can be shared or saved as a spreadsheet, KML file for Google Maps, or shapefile. Pierce County is dedicated to increasing access to government data. The new portal will help increase economic development, improve everyday decision-making, and enhance educational opportunities for County residents.

Judith Carr attended TEDxBrum. She was a little surprised and mightily pleased to find so many speakers talking on themes related to open data. 2014 is turning out to be a year of firsts for me, writing this column for one and now my first TEDx. I have to admit to being very excited just buying the tickets, especially as it seemed fitting that TEDxBrum 2014 was going to be in the new library. I have been watching TEDs for a few years now, although recently this has tailed off. Mainly, because I find I get carried away and just like it is impossible to have one jaffa cake, I find it difficult to just watch one.

When Brett Goldstein was appointed as Chicago’s first chief data officer (CDO) in May 2011, he found himself in the middle of a classic IT struggle. The city’s data was spread across the municipality and mired in silos, making it difficult to get a holistic view. Telephone calls and interoffice envelopes were the city’s data integration tools of choice, Goldstein said, only half joking. That needed to change — in a hurry. The city was set to host the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit in May 2012. The event would bring in heads of state — and throngs of protesters — to Chicago. Goldstein wanted to provide public safety officials with better “situational awareness,” or the ability to understand what was happening in any given place at any given time.

A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that he lived in the 5th District. Nearly a year after leaving City Hall, former Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn has settled on a next act. And it’s not in electoral politics. McGinn, 54, has accepted a part-time consultant position at the Seattle start-up DriveDecisions, where he’ll work as a “public sector advocate.” That means he’ll recruit governments and foundations across the country to use the company’s data mapping visualization tool. DriveDecisions takes data from many sources to build interactive virtual environments.

Today CERN launched its Open Data Portal, which makes data from real collision events produced by LHC experiments available to the public for the first time. “Data from the LHC program are among the most precious assets of the LHC experiments, that today we start sharing openly with the world,” says CERN Director General Rolf Heuer. “We hope these open data will support and inspire the global research community, including students and citizen scientists.” The LHC collaborations will continue to release collision data over the coming years. The first high-level and analyzable collision data openly released come from the CMS experiment and were originally collected in 2010 during the first LHC run.
