When GeekWire sat down with then-Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn just about a year ago in his City Hall office, the 54-year-old explained how he thought government could help startups. What a difference one year makes — now, 11 months later, McGinn is working at a startup that’s trying to help government leaders. McGinn announced today that he’s now the Public Sector Advocate for DriveDecisions, a Seattle-based company that makes sense of publicly-available open data. In his new part-time role, McGinn — who lost a re-election bid last year to Ed Murray — will work with government officials and foundations that may be interested in using the digestible information and visualizations DriveDecisions offers.

Los Angeles is just the latest city to join the movement toward embracing social innovation in government. In collaboration with local incubator Hub LA, Learn Do Share, and Columbia University, the City Controller’s Tech Bullpen launched an 11-month initiative inviting citizens to use the city’s open data portal, Control Panel LA, to come up with solutions for government efficiency and solving local challenges. The Civic Innovation Lab is similar to Chicago’s CivicLab, Open Austin and OpenOakland, which also aim to connect citizens with government problems that need solving. In fact, more and more innovation projects have cropped up since President Barack Obama created the White House Office of Social Innovation and Civic Participation in 2009, Planetizen points out.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A technology expert who helped create a tool that allows businesses and residents of Puerto Rico to search for government programs for which they might be eligible was appointed Thursday as the city of San Diego’s chief data officer. Maksim Pecherskiy will be responsible for the city’s open data programs. “Maksim is a perfect fit for the role of chief data officer,” said Mayor Kevin Faulconer, who made the appointment. “He will use public data and technology to help government make data-driven decisions, improve service delivery to our residents and positively impact the quality of people’s lives.” Pecherskiy was a fellow for Code for America last year when he developed the government search product in Puerto Rico called PrimerPeso.

Zoho Corp., an IT product company from India, today announced the launch of Zoho.in, a suite of applications for companies to run their entire business on Zoho. Zoho is offering this package free exclusively for Indian businesses. Included in the package is an offer for Indian businesses to register a free .in or .co.in domain, a flexible website creation application in Zoho Sites, Email Hosting application in Zoho Mail and Document Management and Office suite apps in Zoho Docs, as well as several mobile applications that accompany these web applications. Additionally, Zoho also announced plans to open a data center in India to serve Indian businesses. The Zoho.in package is free for the first 25 users in a business.

The Government has embraced a new standard that will allow it to open its procurement data up to the public. Britain becomes the latest adopter of the Open Contracting Data Standard (OCDS), which aims to make government procurement data more transparent. Version 1.0 of the OCDS was released yesterday by the Open Contracting Partnership, and the UK joins Canada, Costa Rica, Paraguay and Colombia in adopting the standard. Incoming executive director of the Open Contracting Partnership, Gavin Hayman, said OCDS would help kill off clandestine agreements between governments and companies. He said: “It is time to end secret deals between companies and governments to make sure public resources are spent openly, effectively and efficiently.
