The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has celebrated the annual African statistics day, which was on the theme “Open Data for Accountability and Inclusiveness.” In a speech read on his behalf, the Minister of Finance, Mr Seth Terkper described the theme for the celebration as most appropriate, since open data informs citizens on the endeavours of government and makes government more accountable. The Minister gave the assurance that government would continue to support the Statistical Service with the required resources to work. He underscored the need for a well-coordinated national statistical system and the support of other players such as the statistics units of government ministries, departments and agencies, to help meet the growing demand for data in the country.

D.C.-based startup FiscalNote has closed a $7 million round of funding from a raft of big names including local VC Steve Case and a capital firm created by the Winklevoss twins. FiscalNote is a data analytics startup with the intriguing angle of focusing on predicting legislation, claiming an amazing 94 percent rate of accuracy. The Series A round was led by Visionnaire Ventures, a joint fund between the Singapore sovereign wealth fund and Taizo Son, but institutional investments like Winklevoss Capital and angel investors like Case made the round as a whole possible. “We are very excited to join a team at FiscalNote that has already realized considerable success disrupting the open data space,” said Keith Nilsson, co-founder at Visionnaire Ventures in a statement.

Government yet to commit to open contract standard Cabinet Office exploring how to best ensure openness of data for its contracted services, despite not taking part in launch of new global transparency standard The UK is yet to join other governments in backing the Open Contracting Data Standard (OCDS) launched this week, but claims work is ongoing to improve access to information on outsourced public service contracts as part of wider transparency commitments. Despite not having signed up to the OCDS, which provides national governments with tools to ensure more open outsourcing, the Cabinet Office maintained that “good progress” was being made in engaging with civil society bodies and other organisations to ensure its transparency aims were ambitious.

As the mayoral election looms, Emanuel pointed to years of shrinking budget gaps. But is the relatively rosy picture hiding a darker budget reality? City Council lauded the mayor for stabilizing the city’s finances, at least for another year. But looming ahead is a $550 million pension payment to police and fire pension systems. Nonetheless, 46 aldermen voted to approve this $8.9 billion budget plan that increases spending about $300 million from the year before.

MTN Qhubeka’s general manager Brian Smith has said that he is open to sharing as much information as possible with fans and others, saying that he wants the team to be open and transparent. Smith is about to head to South Africa for the team’s first training camp in advance of the 2015 season, a year when he hopes that it will ride both the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España.
