The Nigerian Statistical Association (NSA), has called on the federal government to review existing laws relating to crude oil sales data collation process and those relating to transactions in the free trade zones. This is to enable the country get reliable statistical data on all trade transactions on export commodities for effective planning and economic development. Making the call yesterday in his lecture delivered to mark the African Statistics Day in Abuja, President of the NSA, Dr Muhammed Tumala, said that the current laws were inhibiting open data production and denying the country of knowing the actual volume and values of transactions on key sectors of the economy.

I write in response to the article on whether post-publication peer review can endure the legal action launched by a US scientist who claims that anonymous comments posted on Pub Peer cost him a job offer (“The thin line between libel and criticism”, Research intelligence, 13 November). When scientists’ livelihoods are at stake because of competition for funding and jobs, a process that allows anonymity would seem to provide an open invitation for inappropriate behaviour by some. Similar issues occur in the traditional peer review process in biomedical journals.

You may think any story on the government is hard to understand, and you’re not alone – even trained researchers can’t find some of the data they need. The most thorough survey of the workings of Whitehall has found what we have all long suspected – it’s almost impossible to understand what the Chancellor is doing. The Whitehall Monitor report from the Institute for Government, published this morning, looked at the open data available from various government departments and found that the Treasury was one of the least transparent. The authors of the report graded each department on how well they explained changes to their Spending Plans in each publication.

Startups are using big, open data to power apps and tools designed to keep people healthier — and we’re not just talking about Watson. Three years ago, Jeopardy fans got to see Watson, IBM’s supercomputer, beat two human Jeopardy champions to take a $1 million prize. Watson’s skill at the game derived not just from its computing power but from its ability to process huge amounts of data rapidly. The next year, IBM and the Cleveland Clinic announced that Watson was turning to more serious pursuits and had “enrolled” in medical school. It’s been a productive partnership: Last month, they launched a new Watson program using genomic data to find the best options for cancer patients. Watson’s venture into healthcare is part of a new movement to data-driven medicine.

Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker visited 1776 on Monday to mark the first day of Global Entrepreneurship Week — and the one-year anniversary of her “Open for Business Agenda” announcement. For the occasion, she ladled out some encouragement to all struggling entrepreneurs. “Flying without a net is a pretty terrifying experience,” said Pritzker. “But that doesn’t mean you aren’t going to be successful.” Pritzker, who was answering questions from 1776 cofounder Evan Burfield, also defended the economic progress made under her watch. “We’re not letting grass grow under our feet,” she said. She admitted that the Department of Commerce, and the administration as a whole, still had ways to go to optimize its approach to open government.
