And by sexy, read ‘in-demand’, since there is a severe shortage of data scientists. What’s more, statistics show the situation is likely to remain that way for at least 10 more years. “We have much demand for related MSc courses,” admits John Keane, a professor of Data Engineering at Manchester University’s School of Computer Science. “Data science is very popular and it’s a generic skillset that can be applied across many areas such as social sciences, business, science and engineering and medicine and life science. In fact, I can’t think of a domain in which it wouldn’t be useful.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) gas created a disaster recovery app that will provide real-time information in the wake of severe weather events about which neighborhoods have electricity and which gas stations have fuel.  Developed in response to lessons learned in the aftermath Hurricane Sandy, Lantern Live will allow users to report and view availability of fuel at nearby gas stations and access utility outage maps. Lantern Live builds on the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy’s Disaster Response and Recovery Initiative, which is designed to accelerate the development of open data for power outages, and helps lay the groundwork for emerging best practices of mobile app development across the federal government.

Governments and organizations have become some of our largest data collectors and the resource is often resting in silos untouched. Open Data is taking this valuable resource and giving it to people who can unlock its value – resulting in new economies, job creation and increased efficiencies in public services. Many Valley Metro riders know that when their bus or light rail arrives, it may not match the time on their schedule. But a new policy may make live transit data available to the public, though your access to it may be outside the city’s hands. The city council of Phoenix recently approved an open data policy making available real-time schedule data of the city’s transit system to the public. In partnership with Valley Metro, which serves Phoenix and surrounding cities, the data reflects where buses and light rail cars actually are as opposed to the static schedule that is currently available. The city council approved the policy as the first of several “open data” projects.

NEW YORK—The City’s 311 system has become a model platform for citizens to give non-emergency complaints to their government. New Yorkers are able to voice concerns by calling, filling out a website form, text messaging, and using a mobile app to report issues like potholes or noisy neighbors. They are also able to get information about a wide array of city services through 311’s various platforms. Launched in 2003, New York City 311 has received over 190 million calls and interacts with over 100,000 residents on a typical day. Thanks to the 2012 Open Data Law, information about the requests are now placed on the Open Data Portal and updated daily.

On the campaign trail, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer promised that his administration would be way more open than the disgraced mayor he was replacing. “Kevin Faulconer believes restoring trust, integrity and confidence in City Hall starts with transparency,” Faulconer’s campaign website said. Now more than eight months into his term, Faulconer has stalled on a number of key transparency promises. And Faulconer blames other city officials for his inability to follow through. Faulconer isn’t sticking to his pledge to make all city communications related to public business public and he’s delayed an audit and task force to examine the city’s transparency policies.
