The province of Alberta announced an app development competition during the City of Edmonton’s second annual Open Data Day Hackathon at the Stanley Milner Library. The competition is offering $70,000 in cash for four selected apps. “We are encouraging developers across North America to use provincial data. They can combine it with data from any other source and develop apps that either have some sort of economic value towards them or that provide a social good,” Mark Diner explained. “We have judges from across Alberta who will be judging it and what they will be looking for is innovation and bold ideas.” The cash will be divided into best overall application, $30,000; best made in Alberta application, $30,000; best student app, $5,000 and the people’s choice, $5,000.

SEUK, using funds from the Cabinet Office’s Release of Data Fund, has published an open data analysis of the public sector’s spend on social enterprises in the past four years. The data provides, for the first time, accurate and exact information on how much money public bodies have spent with social enterprises. SEUK are hopeful this will be the start to a new era of accountability and transparency for public bodies who will be able to benchmark their social enterprise spend with their peers, as well as create opportunities for social enterprises to lobby and campaign for greater spend with the sector.

Computer programmers and hackers gathered at the University of Calgary’s Taylor Family Digital Library this weekend to turn the massive amounts of data collected by the Canadian government into something useful. Known as the Canadian Open Data Experience (CODE) Hackathon, between 40 and 50 data-driven programmers from Alberta participated in Calgary’s branch of the event, which challenged hackers to build a working app in 48 hours. On Saturday morning, hackers such as U of C computer science student Jan Clarin gathered at the library. Clarin said the competition is about giving data back to the people. “Everyone is always wondering about what the government has been doing and how they’re using our information,” he said.

Data miners and code writers hooked up in Edmonton Saturday in hopes of hacking up something useful. The International Open Data Day hackathon used speed data-ing to forge relationships between those who collect data and the coders capable of creating unique ways to share it. “We make the data available,” said Jason Darrah, director of public communications for the City of Edmonton, “but these coders are going to turn it into useful information that Edmontonians can see.” Saturday’s event – hosted by the Edmonton Public Library (EPL) – was one of 210 hackathons around the globe hosted to mark International Open Data Day, encouraging government agencies, non-profits and other organizations to share the data they collect with the public to increase transparency and accountability.

It was a big week for big data in Silicon Valley where O’Reilly’s Strata & Hadoop World Conference is ending today. The star of the show might have been data scientist Vijay Subramanian of Rent the Runway whose company rents Oscar-worthy gowns (that most of us can’t afford to buy) for our one-night-only Cinderella moments. Or maybe it was data scientist Noelle Sio of Pivotal Labs who volunteered at CrisisTextLine which helps connect teens in trouble with the volunteer counselors who might help them. Or possibly President Barack Obama who streamed in via video to introduce DJ Patil as the United States’ Chief Data Scientist. Never mind all the vendors like Microsoft and MapR who made some impressive announcements.

Big Data adoption is typically a year-long journey for enterprises, according to Mani Chhabra, CEO, Cloudwick, Inc. In his live interview at BigDataSV with theCUBE co-hosts Jeff Kelly and Jeff Frick, the initial phase in adoption is where the beginnings of a platform are installed, and the enterprises can see the value in Big Data, “then you start building the data pipelines” and finally when the data available is available in the platform, it can be be analyzed, transformed and taken to the visualization level,” he explained. The first phase takes about a month, building data pipelines three to six months, and the final stage another few months. Asked whether the companies understood the value of Big Data, Chhabra said that the Fortune 1000 gets it, “the challenge is beyond Fortune 1000.

PUBLIC and private institutions were Thursday advised to use official data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in formulating policies for proper planning and development. National Census Commissioner, Ms Amina Mrisho, opening a two-day workshop in Dar es Salaam that attracted users and producers of data under the theme; Micro data Outreach and Advocacy, said NBS is the only organ in the country responsible for the provision of official statistics. She warned against the use of data sourced from unauthorized sources, saying such information is likely to lead to formulation of improper policies.
