Data miners and code writers hooked up in Edmonton Saturday in hopes of hacking up something useful. The International Open Data Day hackathon used speed data-ing to forge relationships between those who collect data and the coders capable of creating unique ways to share it. “We make the data available,” said Jason Darrah, director of public communications for the City of Edmonton, “but these coders are going to turn it into useful information that Edmontonians can see.” Saturday’s event – hosted by the Edmonton Public Library (EPL) – was one of 210 hackathons around the globe hosted to mark International Open Data Day, encouraging government agencies, non-profits and other organizations to share the data they collect with the public to increase transparency and accountability.
