Review and revise their ethics statements to address emerging issues. Traditional areas of concern like conflict-of-interest and provenance research may need to be expanded to include sections on internships, privacy of digital data and the ethical provenance of art displayed in the museum. Policies on individual and corporate support may need to be updated and strengthened, and museums working in the global arena may want to take a proactive stance on ethical concerns related to that work. Merritt specifies, on the hot-button topics of museum workers’ wages and unpaid internships: Now might be a good time to discuss what investments are consonant or inconsistent with the museum’s mission and values.

CALGARY – It’s not usually a good thing when you hear about people hacking into government data, but for 48 hours this weekend, students, entrepreneurs and amateur developers are being invited to comb through the government’s raw data online. The point? To come up with apps that can help everyday Canadians. “There’s all this data that the government has been collecting forever and it usually—until a few years ago—it has just been collected then sat on government servers or in books doing nothing,” said XMG vice president of operations and marketing Patti Mikula, one of the event organizers. “So this effort by the government has been to make that data freely and openly available to everyone so it can be used for cool applications that will impact everyday Canadians’ lives.

Pivotal Software, Inc. has switched its Big Data Suite to a subscription model from a proprietary license. This decision, said Sunny Madra, Vice President of Data products at Pivotal, was made in response to customers behavior. “Customers are following a journey,” Madra said, beginning with Pivotal’s big data groups to capture info, then working with Pivotal data science grouse to gain insights, and then taking said insights and creating a data-driven app that runs in Cloud Foundry. Pivotal also chose to open source many of their Big Data products, including Green Plum, Hawk and Gemfire. The decision to do so, said Madra, was a reaction to changing industry standards. When vendors come bearing gifts of “standards,” you better take a closer look. Matt Asay explains. Open source history has a way of repeating itself… and not always in a good way. This week’s “big news” in big data is the banding together of EMC Pivotal, IBM, and Hortonworks in a grand Hadoop alliance called the Open Data Platform (ODP). The one hitch, however, is that it’s neither open, nor grand, nor destined to succeed. ODP, much like UnitedLinux before it, is an effort by the also-ran vendors in a market to prop themselves up against more successful competitors. It’s bad strategy, and bad for Hadoop. Fortunately, like United Linux, ODP will fail. I don’t blame Hortonworks and Pivotal for trying. Hortonworks is right to welcome lesser competitors to rally around its flag.

DETROIT, MI –When Detroit Chief Information Officer Beth Niblock arrived in Detroit from Louisville, Ky. about a year ago with the goal of upgrading Detroit’s information technology, she says some departments were using Windows NT 3.1, an operating system released in 1993. The recently announced Open Data Platform is intended to both foster innovation both on the customer side and throughout the industry. Shaun Connolly, Vice President of Corporate Strategy at Horntonworks and Leo Spiegel, Senior Vice President of Corporate Development at Pivotal, sat down together on theCUBE to talk with host John Furrier about their contributions and expectations for the Open Data Platform.
