Can a person have fun with the federal budget? If you can, this is probably as close to it as it gets. Seattle-based open data startup Socrata has taken the U.S. government’s federal budget for 2016 and loaded it into an “interactive experience” called the Open Budget application. The app allows users to “drill-down and explore the White House Administration’s priorities and initiatives,” the company says. Why? The $4 trillion budget can be confusing to the everyday person. Socrata hopes the application will bring more transparency to exactly what the Feds are doing with your tax dollars.

Python and R wonks take note: The United States now has a chief data scientist. DJ Patil was recruited by President Obama personally and just appointed to the newly created position, where the ex-LinkedIn chief scientist will work in a supervisory role for a broad analytics effort across the federal government. His duties will include shaping policies and practices across agencies, building data science partnerships with the private sector, and helping agencies recruit talent. The White House says Patil will also work in a more hands-on role at the National Institutes of Health’s Precision Medicine Initiative, which is working on better ways to create genomics-based therapies for individual patients.

Mayor Mike Duggan said today he will require all of his political appointees to sign disclosure statements revealing potential conflicts of interest, as part of a new initiative to make city operations more transparent, with more data and documents posted online. The Duggan administration announced the launch of its open data initiative through which the city will post information such as crime statistics, building permits, housing demolitions, contracts and other financial transactions at the city’s web site, data.detroitmi.gov. Some of the data is already available at the site, but Duggan said more will be posted in the next few months, with all financial transaction data available by mid-year.

The city released a treasure trove of data on 311 calls that should help create new apps and other tools, according to a local expert. Mack Male, who has used other information from the city’s open data catalogue in the past, said the 311 data is a huge step forward. “There’s a ton of data here. Over 100,000 data points in what they’ve uploaded and this is just a subset of the overall data they have,” he said. Male said there is unlimited potential for both the city itself and citizens to learn from the data. “Any open data set is interesting to citizens and there are certainly geeks like me who will do things with it,” he said.

The fourth release of material in the New York Philharmonic Leon Levy Digital Archives – the multi-year initiative to digitize the Orchestra’s extensive archives, funded by the Leon Levy Foundation – has been completed, with all existing Philharmonic printed programs, from the first concert in 1842 to the present, now available online, and current printed programs being added every concert week. The New York Philharmonic has also now become the first major symphony orchestra to provide open access to its performance history data.
