Changing Environments, a Cambridge-based Internet of Things startup, is trying to improve the way communities and its citizens interact. The company has created a network for civic-minded app developers and organizations to connect with mobile phone users through sensor-connected “urban appliances.” Last week, the company announced that it has raised $1 million in funding from FKA, the Where Fund, and the MIT Media Lab-connected E14 Fund. The company is focused on creating a series of hackathons that promote civic innovation and building public projects that leverage data-recording sensors to improve the relationship between citizens and municipalities. Changing Environments is best known for its Soofa “smart benches” that were piloted at various parks throughout the city last year.

Canadian Open Data Experience runs February 20th to 22nd, $40,000 in prizes available to be won VANCOUVER, Feb. 18, 2015 /CNW/ – After a national tour to promote the Canadian Open Data Experience, the time has come for the country to test their coding prowess against a ticking clock. The Honourable Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board will kick off CODE 2015 – The Canadian Open Data Experience, a hackathon aimed at students, entrepreneurs and innovators. On February 20th over 1000 participants will come together in teams of one to four people to compete over 48 hours. Their task: to create web and mobile apps using federal open data sets available through open.canada.ca and by “mashing-up” data from all levels of government.

The Canadian Open Data Experience (CODE) is kicking off on February 20th and aims to continue to the “largest competitive hackathon in Canada.” This is the second year of the event and desires to top last year where over 900 developers competed over 48-hours for $30,000 in prizes. This year, CODE 2015, which is Canada’s only government sponsored hackathon, has upped its ante and raised the prize level to $40,000 and will officially start February 20th to 22nd. Over the 48-hour period, the goal is for developers to “create web and mobile apps using federal open data sets available through open.canada.ca and by “mashing-up” data from all levels of government.” CODE 15 is a national competition open to anyone 18 years of age.

Despite opposition from an association representing county governments, a bill that would free up state GIS data is poised to advance in the Maryland legislature this week. State Sen. Bill Ferguson, a chief sponsor of SB94, told Technical.ly Baltimore that he believes it has the votes to pass out of the Senate’s Education, Health and Environmental Affairs Committee. The panel was expected to vote on the Senate version this week. A similar bill was also filed in the House, but a hearing isn’t scheduled until Feb. 25. The bill, which was recommended by the newly-created Maryland Council on Open Data, would amend state law to guarantee that GIS mapping data is available largely for free.

The Canadian Open Data Experience kicks off its second hackathon on Friday, February 20th. CODE 2015, is the country’s only government-sponsored competitive hackathon and this year organizers of the 48-hour challenge have raised the prize from $30,000 to $40,000. The goal of the compettion is to build mobile and Web applications app using federal government data from Canada’s Open Government portal and by “mashing-up” data from all levels of government. The competition is open to anyone 18 years or older. The focus for the apps this year will be baded around youth, commerce and quality of life. There are three VIP hubs that developers can participate in: Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Participants can also register at a Partner Hub spaces across the country.

Open source is driving Big Data and two major announcements from Pivtol prove that this is not going to stop. The announcements are a sign of a continuing shift toward open source to big data, and for the enterprise in general. According to the first announcement, Pivotal will create what it claims is the “world’s first open source big data product suite,” by releasing Pivotal HAWQ, Pivotal HD, Greenplun Database and Gemfire products all as open source projects. In the second announcement, Pivotal said it will be joining Verizon, IBM and Infosys and others in creating Open Data Platform initiative which is designed for improving the Hadoop ecosystem.

State and local governments can’t afford to turn a blind eye to the world of connected devices, sensors and digital data. Research firm IDC predicts that by 2018 “cities and metropolitan areas will represent at least 25 percent of government spending on deploying, managing and realizing the business value of the Internet of Things. At this point, mostly large cities are deploying point IoT solutions, but this will change as midsize cities realize benefits.” In a new report released last week, IDC PlanScape: The Essentials of Internet of Things Investment for Smart Cities, IDC provides a planning framework for states and cities to benefit from rapid advances in IoT.

Bush is replaying his brother’s 1999 strategy of overwhelming his putative rivals by outfundraising them early, but with one twist, they report: All this money flows to Bush’s Right to Rise PAC and a separate super PAC that can take money in unlimited sums. The way that Bush set up the two committees — at the same time and with the same attorney, former Romney super PAC lawyer Charlie Spies — is “unique,” said elections law lawyer Kenneth Gross, a former attorney for the Federal Election Commission.

In April 2014, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) released millions of lines of Medicare Part B physician payment data, that led many researchers, analysts, journalists, and the general public to use the data to answer a number of pressing health care questions. And while the dataset does not include patient-level information, it does offer provider identifiers, which can facilitate data aggregation, highlight practice patterns, and cost trends (i.e. specialties with disproportionately higher payments and individual providers as “outliers”). Our goal here, like many before us, is to highlight striking disparities in this dataset (despite its limitations); attempt to understand why they occur; and provide opportunities to address them.
