Harkanwal Singh is the data editor for the New Zealand Herald. The New Zealand Herald hosted the Open Data Day on Saturday, as part of the international event held in various countries. The event was attended by programmers, academics, civil servants and journalists. The aim of this event is to raise awareness for the open data movement and facilitate the sharing of knowledge across diverse skill sets, which helps build better infrastructure for public data sets. Open data is data that can be freely used, reused and redistributed by anyone – subject only, at most, to the requirement to attribute and sharealike, according to the Open Data Handbook.

Windsor Hackforge, a local tech-centred non-profit, paired up journalism students and computer science students in its first-ever data journalism hackathon on the weekend called Press Play.

The session aims to give attendees confidence when publishing data derived from personal data. The workshop is free and funded by the Release of Data Fund. It is open for everyone; however, preference is given to participants from government sectors. Previous experience of analysing or publishing datasets is useful, but not required. The talk, organised by Maytree, will be presented by Harvey Low – Manager of the Social Research & Analysis Unit at the Toronto Social Development Finance & Administration Division. During the session, Harvey will provide ideas on how the nonprofit sector can communicate its priorities to government, in particular local municipalities, around what types of data it needs. At the same time he will suggest ways that the sector can position itself as a source of open data to support public policy. He calls it the new frontier of open data: The ways in which local municipalities and nonprofit organisations can work together towards innovation and mutual social policy goals. Microsoft researcher Kati London’s aim is “to try to get people to think of data in terms of personalities, relationships and emotions”, she told the audience at the Story Festival in London on Friday. Through Project Sentient Data, she uses her background in games development to create fun but meaningful experiences that bridge online interactions and things that are happening in the real world. One such experience invited children to play against the real-time flow of London traffic through an online game called the Code of Everand. The aim was to test the road safety knowledge of children between the ages of 9-11 and “make alertness something that kids valued.

This one-day event taking place in a beautiful venue, LSO St Luke’s, just around the corner from the ‘Silicon Roundabout’, hosted 6 speakers who covered many aspects of digital design, print and coding for web. Great atmosphere and tons of information! Harry Roberts kicked off with an in-depth talk about theming and user-customisation of websites. As an award-winning front-end architect and consultant on UI, he certainly had a lot to say on the topic. The developers in the room got a detailed explanation of four (and a half) different techniques of using CSS to create themes on their website, and when to use which.

Today is International Open Data Day and all around the world citizens are gathering to liberate data and put it to use. More than 100 events are scheduled, from Belgium to Bangladesh and Paraguay to Portugal. In the UK alone, events are taking place in Bath, Hampshire, London and Manchester. The events are run by volunteers, determined that transparency is an idea whose time has come. They want to show the enormous value of open data and push governments to adopt open data policies and release more data. These demands are being heard in the UK. Ordnance Survey (OS) has today announced a new suite of open data products and key support for open data publishers, developers and innovators.
