Two recent bills signed by Gov. Jerry Brown could help businesses grow by making troves of government data available online in easily accessible formats. A panel comprised of leaders in the public and private sector spoke about the importance of open data Wednesday, applauding the two pieces of legislation signed last month, but agreeing there was more to accomplish. The conference, which took place at the Milken Institute in Santa Monica, attracted a crowd of approximately 150 business owners, data aficionados, and members of the general public. California Secretary of State Alex Padilla, who took the first question posed by moderator Ben Welsh, a data editor at the Los Angeles Times, said the legislation marked a significant cultural change on behalf of government.

The Digital Cities Survey has ranked the City of Long Beach as ninth of the the Top 10 Digital Cities in the country using technology to improve services and boost efficiencies, the city announced today. It’s the fifth consecutive year the city has ranked in the top 10. Long Beach moved down two spots in the rankings for cities with populations of 250,000 or more, from sixth last year to ninth this year. “Being a Top-10 Digital City for five consecutive years demonstrates that we are continuing to use technology to deliver better and more efficient services for residents and businesses,” said Mayor Robert Garcia in a statement.

He said: As a data-driven government, we want to engage with the UK’s data economy. Those who are at the leading edge, not just in open data but across the whole data spectrum. In the same speech, the Minister announced that the Cabinet Office is creating a steering group to oversee the embedding of data infrastructure across government.

The government is to create a modern data sharing infrastructure centred on using open data, rather than simply adding to the 20,000-plus data sets it has already published. Downing Street plans to do this by creating APIs that allow different departments and sectors to tap into open data, rather than make it available through the release of bulk amounts of data. Cabinet Office minster Matt Hancock explained how the government will approach the next steps for open data use. “With every other aspect of government, we need data services built around the needs of users, not the internal logic of Whitehall. This starts with the dog-fooding principle [of] using your own product,” he said in a speech at the Open Data Institute (ODI) summit.

The electronic payments and banking company ACI Solutions has announced it is to open a new EMEA data centre in late 2016 to accommodate growing demand. In terms of universal payments companies, ACI Worldwide is one of the largest of its kind, with its statistics showing that its software processes $13trn each day in payments and securities transactions for more than 300 of the leading global retailers, and 18 of the world’s 20 largest banks. But now, it has confirmed that it will expand its European data centre operations with the opening of the Irish-based data centre, making it the company’s largest data centre in Europe. Currently, the company operates several smaller data centres in the EMEA region along with a number of centres based in the US states of Georgia and Nebraska.

In a speech earlier this week, Matt Hancock, minister for the Cabinet Office, referred to data as being “no longer just a record” but a “mineable commodity, from which value can be extracted” and outlined how the UK government intends to improve its use of the information at its disposal and help others exploit the data too. “Government data is no longer a forgotten filing cabinet, locked away in some dusty corner of Whitehall,” Hancock said. “It’s raw material, infinite possibility, waiting to be unleashed. No longer just a record of what’s happened, but a map of what might be.” Hancock said he wants to ensure data is not just more readily published but that it is made more usable.
