The future of cities will be smaller, wired, and very chatty, said Google’s Chief Internet Evangelist Vint Cerf on Wednesday at a panel discussion on the Internet of Things # ReducingCyberRisk at NYU’s Brooklyn-Based PolyTechnic School of Engineering. The government plans to upgrade its data infrastructure as part of its “data revolution” for the public sector, according to Cabinet Office minister Matt Hancock. Speaking at the ODI summit in early November, Hancock said the government is on the “foothills of a data revolution” and needs to update its infrastructure to ensure it can take advantage of the data. “We need to get better at standardising and maintaining our data. We need to move away from government’s reliance on bulk data sharing and create an economy of APIs,” he said “And as with every other aspect of government, we need data services built around the needs of users, not the internal logic of Whitehall.

With Data Lens, publishers and admin users can quickly create interactive visualizations so that their constituents can easily see simple trends and engage with public data. We have just made it possible for users in government organizations to collaborate with each other on Data Lens pages. We also made it easier to create simpler, more consumable Data Lens pages for constituents. Previously, only publishers and administrators could create Data Lens pages, which limited the users in an organization who could take advantage of Data Lens. Now, we have opened up the rights to create Data Lens pages to all users with domain roles, i.e. Viewer, Editor, Designer, in addition to Publishers and Administrators.

Canada used to have a mandatory longform census, held every five years. Then, in 2010, the government, claiming the privacy of Canadians was being invaded, scrapped the census and replaced it with a shorter, voluntary National Household Survey. The move was not well received, to put it lightly. The head of Statistics Canada, the department that administers the census, quit in protest. Social scientists said they wouldn’t use the NHS data. During the most recent Canadian election, however, the Liberal party campaigned on a promise that they would bring the long-form census back—and won. On Thursday morning, it was announced that the long-form census was coming back.

Through a Vice documentary last year, grime artist JME asked for transparency to be brought to something that affects both his livelihood and his way of life: performing music. Without realizing it, he may well have been talking about a need for open data. Open data and grime are not three words that are regularly featured in the same breath. Grime is a style of music born in London in the early 2000s; a sparser, frenetic mix of garage, reggae, dub, hip hop and other genres. Open data is the term used for data that anyone can use access, use and share, pioneered by the inventor of the web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee. As grime emerged from its early raves and the airwaves of the capital’s pirate radio stations it entered mainstream consciousness and its popularity boomed.
