Decades’ worth of data revealing the health of our seas and marine wildlife, will be made freely available to the public for the first time, following the launch of a new ‘Data Hub’ today by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas). The Cefas Data Hub, an online portal allowing the public and UK businesses to explore, download and reuse the data for their own research, will be populated by hundreds of free marine datasets in the coming months. The hub is being launched alongside newly released data on fish populations and climate change and is an important step in the #OpenDefra project, which will see the release of thousands of datasets over the year in the biggest government data giveaway the country has ever seen.

The government’s efforts to encourage people to switch their accounts away from the big high street banks are not seeing much success as they would have wished. The aims to increase competition in the personal banking sector have been scuppered by the fact that customers appear to be “stubbornly resistant” to the idea of changing away from their current banks. It is believed that only 16% of people would consider changing to a competitor bank in the coming two years, the so-called “challenger” banks include firms like TSB and Metro. This number is a slight increase on the 13% that was reported by Pinsent Masons and YouGov. However, around 75% of people believe that they will still be banking with one of the big four organisations in two years from now.

At the request of the authorities a mission from the IMF’s Statistics Department visited Gaborone during November 2–6, 2015, to assist with the implementation of the Enhanced General Data Dissemination System (e-GDDS), which was endorsed by the Executive Board in May 2015. The mission helped redevelop the National Summary Data Page (NSDP), currently on the central bank website, utilizing the Open Data Platform installed with the support of the African Development Bank, to serve as a one-stop publication vehicle for essential macroeconomic data. This makes Botswana the first IMF member country to implement the recommendations of the e-GDDS.
