A new report in The Atlantic CityLab by well-known urban studies guru Richard Florida puts San Diego at 7th on the list of Metro areas with the largest venture capital investment, ahead of Seattle. Combing through federal data has typically been a daunting affair. Even with tools and know-how, it requires patience and a penchant for understanding minutiae. Yet a partnership between the MIT Media Lab and tech companies Deloitte and Datawheel are vying to change this. On Monday, April 4, the trio released Data USA, an open source platform promoted as “the most comprehensive website and visualization engine” ever created for U.S. government data. The lofty claim is delivered about a site that aggregates federal open data from multiple sources and displays it in interactive visuals — colorful charts, maps, profiles and even a few pieces of data-based journalism.

The City of Jackson is sticking to its promise of open government. Monday morning, Mayor Tony Yarber explained the open data portal, which is accessible to the public. Tony Clement, the former president of the Treasury Board, is credited with hosting the government’s first Google Hangout. He was criticized by some for trying too hard to “look cool.” On April 6, 2016, Scott Brison, the current president of the Treasury Board, will follow in the footsteps of his predecessor, to host a Google Hangout on open government. The Hangout represents the launch of the government’s most current consultation on open government scheduled to take place during April and May and will be used to shape Canada’s third national action plan on open government. The plan will ultimately be presented to the Open Government Partnership, an international initiative that aims to get its member countries to make commitments to improve transparency and accountability.

The problem, as I see it, is that this council has talked about open and transparent governance, but is not acting on it I recently filed a freedom-of-information request to the city, seeking emails, notes, reports and all written correspondence pertaining to fire services between former interim CAO Bob Johnston, Mayor Brian Bigger, Melissa Zanette, the mayor’s chief of staff, and fire chief Trevor Bain. The city complied, of course, but what they sent me was rather useless, so redacted were so many of the pages. In fact, there is a page that has been completely blacked out. Why give me this? Why waste my money? The problem, as I see it, is that this council has talked at length about open and transparent governance, but is not acting on it.

DOT has released before-and-after maps for each borough showing how signed speed limits have changed since Mayor de Blasio lowered the city’s default limit to 25 miles per hour in 2014. With the maps, New Yorkers can see which major surface streets are now signed for 25 mph and which have retained higher speed limits. After the 25 mph default speed limit took effect, DOT left 30 mph signs on some wider streets as it evaluated whether to reduce those speed limits. This caused some uncertainty on streets like Riverside Drive, where new 30 mph signs went up, then were replaced, a year later, with 25 mph signs. Now DOT has wrapped up that process and re-signed 800 miles of streets for 25 mph speed limits.
