MIT is mining its close connections with the technology industry to build a new research lab that hopes to harness social media for the public good. Twitter says it’s committing $10 million to sponsor social-media research at the renowned university and giving it access to the two most coveted streams of Twitter data: its “firehose” of real-time tweets and the entire archive of every item ever published on the social media service. The research will be conducted at the school’s Laboratory for Social Machines, which is led by Deb Roy, an MIT Media Lab professor who also works as Twitter’s chief media scientist. Roy joined the company last year after it acquired Bluefin Labs, a television data startup he co-founded.

You bring your lunch, we provide tea & coffee, an interesting talk, and enough time to get back to your desk. You don’t have to look far to find pictures and infographics that visualise data to make us understand it better. But musical representations of data are harder to come by. Developer-musicians Nicholas Tollervey and Simon Davy have taken footfall data provided by the Leeds Data Mill and turned it into music for brass band (yes, you read that right). Their lunchtime lecture will be a loud, fun and thought provoking exposition of open data manipulated via the programming language Python into a meaningful musical medium. Nicholas is a programmer, classically trained musician, philosophy graduate, teacher and writer. Simon is a percussionist with a PhD in Artificial Intelligence.

The Open Government Partnership Open Data Working Group is interested in receiving research proposals for work exploring the technical and practical implications of Open Data. These grants are administered by the Web Foundation and supported by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and will initially support research projects to take place between November 2014 and March 2015.  Awardees will be invited to present their work at an International Open Data Conference in May 2015 in Canada. A second round of grants will be disbursed starting in May 2015, and a new call for proposals will be circulated at that time.

How should the announcement that Oracle plans to open two new data centers in Germany be interpreted? According to Loïc le Guisquet , executive vice president of EMEA at Oracle, the answer is (a) – with a dose of ( b) thrown in for good measure. (Presumably a splash of (c) just for flavor doesn’t do any harm either, mind you!) The on-message party line according to le Guisquet is this: So far, so anodyne – and, perhaps, a somewhat debatable endorsement of the willingness (or otherwise) of German CIOs to take technological risks. Either way, the new facilities – in Frankfurt and Munich – will go live “in the next few weeks” and will be fully operational by the end of the year.

In his first visit to India since he took over as Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella announced that Microsoft will offer commercial cloud services — Azure and Office 365 — from local data centres in the country by the end of 2015. The advantage that it offers is that organisations in India will gain from data sovereignty, lower latency and geo redundancy with local infrastructure. To tap the $2-trillion opportunity in the Indian cloud market, Microsoft plans to set up three data centres in different cities.

The previous commercial release of RESQML, V1.1, was the successor to RESCUE, an industry-defined data exchange standard based on binary files and used since the late 1990s. RESQML V2.0 is an XML- and HDF5-based data exchange standard.
