The use of analytics in firms is not just about CRM, ERP and social media data but it can also apply to the data that only IT departments have visibility to. To address this ExtraHop have made several enhancements to their wire data analytics platform. In the Gartner report “Apply IT Operations Analytics to Broader Datasets for Greater Business Insight,” published in June 2014 analysts Colin Fletcher and Jonah Kowall proposed that ITOA (IT Operational Analytics) could be used to explore the whole data set generated by the business. When one considers that the wires connecting the servers within a company contain all of the data transacted by a company then this starts to make sense.

Open Data zealots rarely give an individual’s privacy a thought – it’s just another obstacle to be driven over in their desire to provoke a data-powered revolution. But a gigantic dump of journeys made by licensed New York City taxis gives a vivid reminder of the dangers of careless data drops. Earlier this year a Freedom of Information request yielded details of 173 million trips made by the yellow cabs, weighing in at over 20GB uncompressed. It contained an MD5 hash of the driver ID (or medallion), precise GPS co-ordinates of pick up and drop off locations, passenger count and trip times. The driver ID was quickly deciphered. It was then possible to match celebrity journeys with drivers. And also the addresses of pickups from outside strip clubs.

Forget traditional websites. To get content out there, agencies need to use new tools, argues the General Services Administration. In its Aug. 26 DigitalGov blog post, the GSA cites the need to change how government publishes information – away from desktop “.gov” websites where traffic is declining, and toward mobile applications, social media and search engines. One way the agency seeks to “free content from websites” is through application programming interfaces, or APIs, which can be created using open source content management systems, or CMS, such as Drupal or WordPress, enterprise CMS such as Percussion, Microsoft SharePoint or Oracle, or websites without a CMS such as those built using Jekyll, which is an open source program.

The most recent data show significant strides in reducing maternal mortality at the national level over the past 20 years.  Improvements in access to maternal health care, especially in skilled birth assistance, have contributed to the reduction of maternal mortality. While these improvements are impressive, the national level data often mask inequalities in skilled birth assistance within countries. There may be gaps within a country, for example, where wealthy women might have better access than women from poor households. According to the World Health Organization, “The high number of maternal deaths in some areas of the world reflects inequities in access to health services, and highlights the gap between rich and poor.

A new government database that debuted Sept. 30 offers information on financial connections between doctors and teaching hospitals and pharmaceutical firms and medical device manufacturers. The open-data play by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services was mandated under provisions of the 2010 health care overhaul. The inaugural data dump covers $3.5 billion in payments from firms to health professionals between Aug. 1 and Dec. 31, 2013. The data was collected from manufacturers over the summer, and matched by CMS to physicians and teaching hospitals. The data allows patients, watchdog groups, and others to map relationships between industry and care providers. Right now, the picture provided by the data available at the Open Payments site is limited.

On 22 July 2014, Mr. Brendan Howlin, TD, Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform launched Ireland’s national Open Data Portal developed by Insight Centre for Data Analytics, NUI Galway together with the research reports produced by Insight. Open Data forms a core element of Ireland’s first Open Government Partnership (OGP) national Action Plan which, following Government approval, will be published and transmitted to the OGP Steering Committee to facilitate Ireland’s full membership of the Partnership.

The government released 4.4 million medical payment records this week as part of the Open Payments database, and it’s already attracting national headlines and criticisms for being incomplete and slow. It’s a major reminder that while open data may be free, it isn’t necessarily clean.
