The Energy Department is tapping the power of crowdsourcing and open data to help citizens during disaster and recovery efforts. Last month, the department launched a mobile app that enables users to find fuel, report the operational status of gas stations and view power-outage maps from local utility companies. Called Lantern Live, the free app was developed in response to lessons learned from Hurricane Sandy and is available for download via Google Play, according to Energy. The app also offers useful tips and guidelines for people during and after severe-weather events. Because the code for Lantern Live will be open source, innovators and entrepreneurs can reuse it in their apps and improve upon or adapt it for other sectors.

The record drought in California has prompted the US Geological Survey to launch a new data visualization website that gives the public more detailed information about the scope of drought in the state. The website is part of the federal government’s Open Water Data Initiative. That project is designed to improve access to data and open exchange of water information in order to get a better picture of existing water resource issues and develop sustainable solutions through open data. The goal of the Open Water Data Initiative is to integrate fragmented water information into a connected, national water data framework and leverage existing systems, infrastructure and tools to support greater innovation, modeling, and data sharing.

The City of Minneapolis’ new open data portal made its debut Monday afternoon, providing information on subjects ranging from fires and police incidents to air quality study results. Most of the data was previously only available to people who submitted formal requests to the city. The city says it is now one of 38 states and 46 cities and counties that make open data portals available to the public. Other information available includes: 311 incidents, crime statistics, open rental licenses, open liquor licenses, digital inclusion survey results, city boundaries and neighborhood revitalization program budgets. Data can be downloaded in charts and maps, and will be updated with more current information.

The city of Minneapolis has launched a new open-data portal, allowing the public to access raw government data online. That means online visitors will have public access to information on city liquor and rental licenses, crime statistics and 311 calls — without having to request it. The data is raw, so the site won’t appeal to everyone. But Otto Doll, the city’s chief information officer, hopes tech-savvy citizens create smartphone apps that will help residents quickly glean information about city services. “By making the data open to folks, there’s probably going to be a fair amount of creative sorts of uses of the information,” he said.

The fifth cooperative mission between China and Brazil was launched at 03:26UTC on Sunday. In what was a milestone 200th launch for the Chinese rocket fleet, the CBERS-4 satellite was lofted by China’s Long March-4B from the LC9 launch complex at the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center. CBERS (China-Brazil Earth Resources Satellite) is a cooperative program of China and Brazil. In November 2002, the governments of China and Brazil decided to expand the initial agreement by including another two satellites – CBERS-3, lost in a launch mishap in December 2013, and CBERS-4 – as the second generation of the Sino-Brazilian cooperation effort. The planned cooperative program of CAST and INPE employs enhanced versions of spacecraft and instruments.

With 5.6 million people living in an area of 270 sq miles (700 sq km), the authorities in Singapore have invested heavily in public transport in an effort to reduce the numbers on the roads. But, like other metropolitan hubs, they faced the inevitable problem of heavy congestion at peak time between 8am and 8.45am. Part of the solution has come in the form of an incentive for passengers: if they registered their smart travel cards and commuted in the hour after these peak times, they would earn points which can be used in a raffle to win cash.

Girls Coding Kosova have been experiencing the beauty of coding, through a workshop organized jointly with Open Data Kosovo and UNDP Kosovo, which today marked the completion of a coding adventure that started last week. The first day of the workshop during this weekend, started with short presentation from Bevuta, a German company providing professional and reliable solutions for IT Businesses, and it continued with representatives from Open Data Kosovo, who engaged the participants in hands-on coding, with Web Development using Python and Flask and MongoDB in Python. This also marked the continuation of the workshop that started last week and giving the final shot towards the projects that were started to be developed.

As per the policy, open data shall be made public to the extent permitted by law. It will be subject to privacy, confidentiality, security or any other valid restrictions. Open data will be accessible in modifiable and convenient formats that can be searched, downloaded, and indexed. Open data shall also be retrievable and reusable. The announcement was made during the “Open Data and e-Participation Forum” held by ictQATAR ‘s Government Information Technology Sector Programme. It was attended by HE Dr Hessa Sultan al-Jaber, Minister of Information and Communications Technology, some of the prominent executives at the ministry, government entity representatives and global researchers and experts.
