President Barack Obama doesn’t have a stellar record when it comes to transparency. And this session of Congress falls short when it comes to passing meaningful legislation. So it’s fair to say that the two branches agreeing on a bill to streamline and strengthen the federal Freedom of Information Act would be quite an accomplishment. In fact, it would extend a laudable record of enacting legislation that promoting government openness. In order to do that, however, the U.S. House needs to approve the FOIA Improvements Act of 2014 before it adjourns on Thursday. A prior version of bill won unanimous consent from the House, and the Senate on Monday gave its approval without opposition.

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is preparing to launch a new open data portal in January that will allow the public to search, sort, and download a variety of information about the district. According to Superintendent Joshua Starr, OpenDataMCPS will launch on January 5, 2015 and will include the Superintendent’s Recommended Fiscal Year (FY) 2016 Operating Budget, as well as enrollment data and school boundary information. “MCPS already shares a tremendous amount of data and information with the public, but we don’t always make it available in the most user-friendly way,” Dr. Starr said. “This new portal will make it easier for the public to find the information they are looking for and provide tools so they can interact with it in a thoroughly 21st-century manner.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – A Graniteville school zone speed camera has issued the second most summonses in all of New York City from the months of June through October, catching 25,034 speeders in that time frame, according to recent data. That averages out to about 164 tickets per day. All other cameras on Staten Island average about six tickets per day. Island residents and Councilman Steven Matteo (R-Mid-Island) have called the speed camera unfair. It’s perched on a car that is parked on Goethals Road North in a no-standing zone, right near the South Avenue exit of the Staten Island Expressway. From that location, the camera has issued $1.25 million in summonses during a five-month period. Drivers say that the camera doesn’t allow enough space for motorists to slow down.

When her oldest daughter was diagnosed with asthma last March, Yodi Stanton installed air pollution sensors around her London home. She wanted to see if there were links between her daughter’s attacks and the number of dirty particles in the air. Ultimately, she wasn’t able to find a correlation. But maybe some else will find gold in this data. Instead of keeping it to herself, Stanton streamed the data to a public online service she helped create called OpenSensors.io, and from there, it can be accessed and analyzed by public health researchers, journalists, and other concerned citizens—or even feed into online applications that can make use of it. OpenSensors is a service where anyone can publish real-time sensor data. Think of it as Twitter for sensors.

TRAFFORD Council has scooped two awards that recognise excellence in innovation. The first award by iNetwork and the Local eGovernment standards body presented to the Greater Manchester Data Synchronisation Programme (GMDSP), which standardised the way data is released across multiple public sector organisations. In its first phase, Trafford, worked with other local authorities and Future Everything to identify datasets suitable for release as open data including allotments, gritting, recycling-sites, streetlights, planning and expenditure. The second award recognised the work undertaken by the AGMA procurement hub for connected procurement for excellence and innovation in ways public services respond to public need and tightening budgets.

How Transport API has taken on the hidden and closed-shop attitude of the transport industry towards its data and won. Managing Director Jonathan Raper tells Business Club how the company has fought for the democratisation of that data and succeeded. Seizing the opportunity when the government decided to open up data in 2010, the company has worked hard to create what is now the largest single source supplier of public transport data via API in the UK. He admits that being a pioneer in the open data movement was a challenge but says the opportunities for Transport API are now significant.
