STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – A Graniteville school zone speed camera has issued the second most summonses in all of New York City from the months of June through October, catching 25,034 speeders in that time frame, according to recent data. That averages out to about 164 tickets per day. All other cameras on Staten Island average about six tickets per day. Island residents and Councilman Steven Matteo (R-Mid-Island) have called the speed camera unfair. It’s perched on a car that is parked on Goethals Road North in a no-standing zone, right near the South Avenue exit of the Staten Island Expressway. From that location, the camera has issued $1.25 million in summonses during a five-month period. Drivers say that the camera doesn’t allow enough space for motorists to slow down.
