I believe that all of us in the networking industry will look back on the last couple of years as a renaissance. Rapid innovation — in the form of bare metal switching, SDN software and  core-and-pod designs, to name a few — have generated more impactful new products in the past two years than in the last 10. inResonance (iR), provider of the FileMaker platform for schools, has acquired Schoolyard, a company that makes Web sites for schools. “The Schoolyard product, brand and key personnel will become a division of iR,” according to a news release. “Schoolyard Founder Mark Bistline will join iR as an important asset to the leadership team and will continue to represent the Schoolyard division in the independent school market.” The acquisition will combine Schoolyard’s open Web systems with iR’s open data systems in an effort to provide more complete integrations of information and communication systems. iR will still provide single sign-on and more for other Web companies and Schoolyard clients will be able to continue working with their existing data system providers.

British Columbians, economic development professionals and potential investors will have access to information from multiple government sources, and the ability to link with third-party, open-source data through the BC Economic Atlas (BCEA) mapping tool. The BCEA, which was launched January 5, is an online resource that uses geographic co-ordinates to connect it to B.C. locations, allowing for data to be visually displayed. “The government has a wealth of information that is of value to businesses and potential investors. Technology now makes it possible to provide that data to the public in a simplified and thematic way.

It’s almost a year since my first post on the DATA.GOV.UK blog, introducing Hampshire Hub – the local information system for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. A lot has happened since then, with the old web site being replaced by a brand new data store, built on 5 star linked open data. I’m really excited about the new hub, and there’s lots to tell you about that, but not in this post. I rather like the phrase: “Engineering Serendipity” which – as I choose to interpret it – means something like ‘creating conditions which maximise the chances of good stuff happening’. If you’re interested in a fuller discussion of Engineering Serendipity, there’s the excellent article written by Greg Lindsay over on Aspen Ideas. I’ll come back to engineering serendipity a bit later.

In 2011, the City of Tampa, FL began creating a master plan for Tampa’s Center City, spanning from downtown to Ybor City on the east, Armenia Avenue on the west, and north along historic Nebraska Avenue to Hillsborough Avenue. The end goal was for Center City Tampa to be a community of livable places, connected people, and collaborative progress that embraces and celebrates its river and waterfront. Working at the bleeding edge of global development is about to get more lively. Akvo.org co-founder Mark Charmer argues the world needs the open source movement to assert itself right now. If you’ve wanted to make a difference in the world, now might be a good time to stick your head into the machine. 2015 is a test moment for the United Nations as it works to get its member states to agree on a joint set of ambitious new goals: the “Sustainable Development Goals” (or SDGs for short). The way data is turned into good decisions is going to play centre stage. On that front, there is still much to be worked out. Since 2000, billions of dollars in investment were shaped by a series of global poverty reduction goals called the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Other than some successful initiatives in the UK, open data is facing challenges around the world. Richard Lee writes ‘One dirty little secret in most US agencies is that they are mandated to provide open data by a certain date but have not been given any additional headcount or funding to do so’ Over the past year, I have attended a number of events in the US and the UK sponsored by their respective open data communities. Clearly, the UK is well ahead of the US – as well as many other countries across the globe – in seeing its vision of empowering citizens and organisations via the wide availability of government-created data come to fruition.

I had been reporting on the Tamiflu controversy for several years when the question of whether to take the drug became personal. For those who haven’t been nerding out on this fascinating scientific saga, the short summary is this: Tamiflu, a pill, is one of two first-line drugs approved to both prevent and treat influenza. (The other is an inhaler, Relenza.) About a decade ago, these flu medicines came under attack, as researchers began to dig into the evidence behind them and reveal holes, inconsistencies, and missing data. The antivirals, they argued, didn’t seem to be as effective as health officials around the world (and the manufacturers) had claimed, and Tamiflu became the poster-child for the open data movement in medicine.

It’s no surprise that dirty air kills. In fact, air pollution was recently placed in the top ten health risks faced by human beings globally. In the UK high concentrations of polluting particles cost health services around around £20 billion per year. The country’s Environmental Audit Committee recently described air pollution as a “public health crisis”. Despite this very real, very widespread risk, the quality of air we breathe doesn’t seem to attract the same level of concern that health crises such as obesity or smoking do. But this is a universal risk that impacts us in every breath we take. When such a fundamental human resource is at risk, we cannot afford to be ambivalent.
