Data officials in Chicago are churning out open datasets faster than ever by using technology rather than developers to get the job done. About a year ago, the city government embedded Pentaho Data Integration (PDI), a graphical extract-transform-load (ETL) tool with pre-built and custom components to process big data, into its OpenData ETL Utility Kit. The kit provides several utilities and a framework to help governments extract data from a database and upload it to an open data portal using automated ETL processes. Before working with PDI, city workers updated datasets manually, said Jon Levy, open data program manager at the Chicago Department of Innovation and Technology.

Last August, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon asked an Independent Expert Advisory Group (IEAG) to make concrete recommendations on bringing about a Data Revolution in sustainable development.  In response, the IEAG delivered its report, and among other items, recommends, “a new funding stream to support the Data Revolution for sustainable development should be endorsed at the Third International Conference on Financing for Development,” in Addis Ababa in July 2015. To support this request and to stimulate conversation, the World Bank Group has drafted issues papers that focus on three priority areas: The papers aim to flesh out the specific development needs, as well as financing characteristics needed to support each area.

Yelp has grown to be a staple for word-of-mouth reviews. But now, the San Francisco-based company, popularized for its restaurant ratings, has partnered with the open data company Socrata to expand its services related to health department inspections. On Jan. 14, the two companies unveiled a strategic partnership to deliver restaurant inspection data to inform citizens not only nationwide, but also globally. The deal will give Yelp additional legitimacy for its reviews, access to new content via Socrata’s city and county client databases, and technical expertise to implement the open data initiative.

The Philippine Red Cross, with the support of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, is targeting 35 health facilities for rehabilitation as part of the overall Typhoon Haiyan recovery plan. The society, in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), has started work on 20 of these facilities in Cebu, Leyte and Panay. The health clinic in Abaca, Leyte, is the first to be restored and was inspected by health officials and representatives from Philippine Red Cross and IFRC last week. “The process starts with a very detailed assessment by our health teams to ensure that all stakeholders are informed and give their consent,” said Dr Bhanu Pratap, the IFRC’s Health Coordinator for the Haiyan operation.

Have you ever typed in an address into Google Maps and couldn’t find the place you were looking for, tried to send mail to a specific place and it always came back, or tried and failed to access address data for your startup? If you answered yes to any of these perils, you understand how challenging it is for a country to keep its address records updated and open. The London based startup and open data advocacy organization Open Addresses UK wants to change all of that by inviting the public to collect and validate housing addresses to build the biggest UK open address dataset ever. To do so, they launched UK’s first open and free address list on Wednesday, calling on individuals and companies to crowdsource information. They presented the initiative at the #GeoMob event in London.

Two small but significant steps forward were taken yesterday in the direction of open access to clinical trial data. A committee of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) yesterday called for the sharing of supporting data for clinical trials results within six months after publication, with a full analyzable data set shared no later than 18 months after study completion or 30 days after regulatory approval. Also yesterday, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) joined the Yale Open Data Access (YODA) Project in agreeing to share data from clinical trials for medical devices and diagnostics. The YODA Project said in a statement that the agreement “establishes a fully independent intermediary to manage requests and promote data use,” as J&J has done with pharmaceutical clinical trial data since last year.
