Hadoop is flexible, economical, scalable and powerful. But before it pushes beyond pilot projects and proofs of concept to become and enterprise-grade technology, there’s still a big question CIOs need to evaluate: Is it secure? The answer: Not quite yet, according to Jeff Kelly, analyst for Marlborough, Mass.-based The Wikibon Project. While Hadoop security capabilities are being developed by the open source and commercial vendor community, they are still immature and often purpose-built rather than comprehensive, Kelly said during the recent webinar Securing Sensitive Data in Hadoop: Challenges and New Approaches. That’s due partially to the fact that Hadoop isn’t a single technology stack from a single vendor.

Consider celebrating by participating in the International Open Data Hackathon and building on your idea for using open data in a meaningful and exciting way. And now for this week’s open data news… A disease known as banana bacterial wilt (BBW) has nearly wiped out the fruit which provides nearly 27% of Ugandans daily caloric intake, so the country’s government drew up an “open data plan” to deal with the crisis. Volunteers use mobile phones to report on outbreaks of the disease and how best to protect crops. The information gathered is then distributed as open datasets through SMS.

In Australia, government data is routinely made available and maintained in the http://data.gov.au repository. This is a single point of reference for data that can be reused for purposes beyond that originally considered by the data custodians. Similarly a wealth of citizen information is available from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Combining this data allows informed decisions to be made through planning scenarios.” We present two case studies that demonstrate the utility of data integration and web mapping.

Technology has grown at such a rate that famed scientists and entrepreneurs like Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk have warned that artificial intelligence “could spell the end of the human race.” However, when it comes to the public sector, an over-rapid implementation of new technology is usually less of a concern. Governments are often laggards, but at the LegCo Secretariat, efforts to overhaul the presentation of its massive data with the latest technology is about to re-define the industry practice in the public sector. “There is a need to help our own people (LegCo staff) as well as LegCo members’ assistants to dig up information more efficiently,” says Mr Kenneth Chen, LegCo Secretary General.

When the U.S. government decided to put boots on the ground in West Africa last fall to help staunch an emerging Ebola epidemic, agencies needed a lot of highly- trained medical and logistics personnel. But they also needed reliable maps — something Liberia didn’t have at the time. It does now, because local officials, overseas governments and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency agreed to work together in an open data framework. NGA led the effort to develop that geographic information in exquisite layers of detail in the span of just a few months, and posted the results on the open Web in real-time.
