After weeks of industry speculation, Pivotal Software Inc. today unveiled what all the hoopla was about: The company is open sourcing its Big Data platform, helping to found an Open Data Platform to promote technologies based on open source software, and is joining with Hortonworks Inc. to further Apache Hadoop capabilities. Pivotal, known for its Cloud Foundry Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and related Big Data technologies such as the SQL-based front end for Hadoop called Pivotal HD HAWQ, is going to open source the underlying technology of its Big Data Suite.

Summary:A new big data platform-as-a-service offering is expected in the fourth quarter of 2015, based on Pivotal Hadoop software. Qrious, a startup owned by New Zealand telco Spark, is working closely with Pivotal on the next generation of its as-a-service big data offering. Qrious technology director David Wills said that version one, also based on Pivotal, was developed in 2013 as a proof of concept of an end-to-end data science platform because traditional methods of provisioning such systems were very costly. Bringing a data science platform-as-a-service offering to New Zealand would make the technology available to organisations on a pay-as-you-go basis that provides the service to those that would otherwise not be able to afford it.

Open source is driving Big Data and two major announcements from Pivotal show that isn’t going to stop. Two major announcements by Pivotal Tuesday signal a continuing shift toward open source products for big data, and for enterprise software in general. The first was that Pivotal will create what it is calling the “world’s first open source big data product suite,” by releasing its Pivotal HD, Pivotal HAWQ, Greenplum Database, and Gemfire products all as open source projects. The second is that Pivotal will join Hortonworks, GE, IBM, Verizon, SAS, Infosys, and others in the creation of an Open Data Platform initiative designed to improve the Hadoop ecosystem. Combined, this news serves as a wakeup call to CIOs who may still be wary of open source software.

Dougs Maytag Home Appliance Center started out as Doug’s Appliance Repair in February of 1991.  Douglas and Kelly Golder began running the company out of their home and garage, where it remained for 3 years. As the company started growing, they rented a store front in the town of Scottsville, Virginia where they continued to provide excellent appliance repair service to their customers.  In, 1996 they ventured out and took advantage of an opportunity to join the Maytag Company. They now have a bigger showroom and office to better serve their customers. At this point the business name changed to Doug’s Maytag Home Appliance Center. This allowed them to sell Maytag products and still be able to maintain the repair side of the business.In 2006, Maytag was sold to the Whirlpool Corporation.

Cali, Colombia’s third largest and at one point one of its most violent cities, is leveraging the power of big data to counteract negative perceptions about the region and to empower its citizens and business investors. Supporting the local government transparency and government open data agendas, Ordnance Survey, GeoPlace and the Improvement Service are enabling AddressBase internal business use customers to release Unique Property Reference Numbers (UPRNs) on a royalty free and open basis. The move will facilitate the release and sharing of public and private sector addressing databases. The UPRN acts as a golden thread, linking multiple information sets about each spatial address in Great Britain. In the same way that each person has a National Insurance number or every book features an ISBN reference, a UPRN uniquely and definitively identifies every addressable location in the country.

In case you haven’t heard, there’s a hackathon this weekend. Come help us tackle some of the city’s biggest problems in this weekend-long event at the AL.com offices. You can register here. The hackathon goes from Friday to Sunday. You can see a full schedule of events here. Food and drinks will be available all weekend, the winners will receive cash awards, and you get to hang out in the AL.com newsroom all day. Raspberry Pis will also be awarded to participants for reaching goalposts within their larger project. A couple of weeks ago I asked you to vote and give suggestions of problems in Birmingham that could be solved with the right technology. You did not disappoint. We received almost 250 responses to the survey and a lot of great suggestions.
