The OpenGov platform has been gaining traction as a tool for governments to demonstrate their transparency by providing better access to government spending data in a user-friendly, digital format. This month, Minneapolis and Pittsburgh, have opened their books to the public using OpenGov. The move by both cities is being viewed as “unprecedented” given the abundance of information the public now has access to.  Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges believes open-sourcing financial information is a “big leap forward” for financial transparency.

Big data vendor Pivotal has announced what it says is the ‘world’s first open source-based, enterprise-class big data product suite.’ Concurrent with the announcement of industry big data consortium Open Data Platform (ODP), big data vendor Pivotal has announced a new release of its Big Data Suite in which its core components will be released under the open systems model. “Pivotal Big Data Suite is a major milestone in the path to making big data truly accessible to the enterprise,” said Pivotal’s Sundeep Madra, talking to iTWire by phone from the company’s Silicon Valley headquarters.

Some of the biggest names in big data have announced a new industry consortium called the Open Data Platform (ODP). ODP’s list of founding members is impressive: AltiScale, Capgemini, CenturyLink, EMC, GE, Hortonworks, IBM, Infosys, Pivotal, SAS Institute, Splunk, Teradata, Verizon and VMware. The say they have founded ODP to “promote big data technologies based on open source software from the Apache Hadoop ecosystem, and to drive collaboration, innovation, and standardisation across big data technologies.” The announcement from San Francisco says Open Data Platform will also “optimise testing among and across the ecosystem’s vendors. These efforts will accelerate the ability of enterprises to build or implement data-driven applications.

Do a Google search for “Pittsburgh budget,” and the first available link takes you to the city government’s budget archive website, which includes operating budgets dating back to 2001. There’s just one problem: All the info is in PDF documents, a format typically maligned by open government advocates, civic hackers and public officials interested in giving citizens easier access to information detailing how municipal governments spend their money. However, some of that PDF info became more readable at the beginning of this month with Fiscal Focus Pittsburgh, an online visualization tool that outlines revenues and expenses in the city’s budgets from 2012 through 2015. Users can filter budget information according to the expense type and corresponding department.

In a move that begins to reposition the company alongside HP, Oracle and other full-stack enterprise software suite vendors, Pivotal today made several announcements around its Big Data offerings. Chief among these was the Pivotal Big Data Suite, which comprises Pivotal’s Big Data tools, all available under a single license. Not only is this suite now available to enterprises, but the tools it encompasses—SQL-on-Hadoop tool HAWQ, Pivotal GemFire, and EMC’s Greenplum analytics database—are now open source as well. Pivotal also announced a long-term partnership with Hortonworks, as well as the formation of the Open Data Platform with companies like GE, IBM, Infosys and SAS.

What’s good for the community is good for business. This is the new golden rule. Or at least that seems to be the case in the world of big data, where most commercial solutions are open source at their core. “Enterprises don’t want lock-in,” said Michael Cucci, a marketing manager at EMC/VMware spinoff Pivotal Software, during an interview last week. He added that companies want to be able to influence the future of the technology that they use to drive their businesses. In fact it’s practically a must. “It has to be open source or the conversation doesn’t begin,” he explained. The decision to make the key parts of Pivotal’s Big Data Suite open source is an industry first for the enterprise market, the company says. Announced Tuesday, the move is aimed at helping its customers tackle two of today’s biggest IT challenges: vendor lock-in and the highly fragmented management of big data. A cloud computing company that was spun out of EMC and its subsidiary VMware in 2013, Pivotal says an open-source core for its products will promote more innovative and resilient tools for enterprise customers. Among the main components of the company’s Big Data Suite are Pivotal HD, the data warehouse Greenplum Database, the SQL-on-Hadoop analytic engine HAWQ and the NoSQL in-memory database Pivotal GemFire.

The Big Data Suite is a single, cloud-based software bundle designed to remove barriers to big data installations and speed up deployments. IT platform-as-a-service provider Pivotal is giving a good old-fashioned college try at herding cats in the Hadoop big data analytics realm. On Feb. 17 the San Francisco-based arm of storage and data protection giant EMC launched what it bills as the “world’s first open-sourced enterprise-class suite of big data products” that it sees as an eventual common-denominator platform for starting and running Hadoop deployments. At the same time, Pivotal and Hortonworks announced a partnership that aligns both companies around a core of Apache Hadoop-based capabilities, including product integrations, joint engineering and production support.
