Each year the American Advertising Federation runs the one of the largest, and most representative competitions mean to recognize creative talent in the advertising industry. This contest starts at the local level, and over 40,000 entries are submitted yearly. The ADDY® Competition is a three-tier process. The first tier is an entry at the local Ad Fed Club level, the second is a district competition, and the third is a national competition. This year, Bit-Wizards is honored to take home 14 ADDY® Awards during the first round of the competition. Three of the awards won are Gold ADDY® Awards and 11 are Silver.

LOW-cost sensors, including those in mobile devices, are creating new possibilities for helping local authorities to manage cities. They help manage flows of goods and people through the city and help us react to unforeseen events in real-time. Brisbane is hosting a national conference for the geospatial industry, with the event presenting a valuable opportunity for startups developing or consuming mapping and geospatial services to network with leading industry, government and academic figures. The Locate conference runs at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from March 10 to 12. It features an open day on the Tuesday where members of the public can view around 50 displays, with some tickets still available for the Tuesday and Wednesday sessions. Conference convenor Steve Jacoby, who is the executive director of land and spatial information at the Department of Natural Resources and Mines, says geospatial services and maps are increasingly crucial to the economy.

WINDHOEK – With the world’s revolutionised technology being at the helm of development, Namibia is set to implement six mobile applications that have been developed to enable smooth service delivery among communities. The mobile applications cover areas of health, education, economics, communications, security and networking. The applications were unveiled last week at a two-day Open Data Innovative Hackathon workshop that was held in the capital aimed at pushing public institutions to open up data in order to help improve access to information for jobs, growth and development. Eighteen individuals with ideas had to design applications that can increase awareness and provide a platform to discuss challenges, opportunities and emerging impacts of open data.

As we all rush to surf upon the sweeping tide of smarter cities, it pays to just pause and think – what exactly is a smart city? Or to put it another way, what is it that makes a city “not so smart” to start with? As urbanisation has been growing, distances have also been increasing between people. Communication systems have found ways to link people who are geographically distant; but they still have to catch up with the problem of how exactly to recreate the relationship between people and the environment, at a time when both are constantly changing. That particular aspect is pretty stable in rural or close-knit environments, mainly due to the availability of information about one’s surrounding at all times.

Forrester Research says enterprise adoption of Hadoop is becoming “mandatory.” But Hortonworks’ first earnings release as a public company suggests heavy lifting lies ahead. After missing earnings by 20 cents and registering lower revenue growth than analysts expected, Hortonworks has a ways to go before it can proclaim itself a big data darling. Or does it? While many analysts looked askance at Hortonworks’ numbers, others — including Wells Fargo analyst Jason Maynard — see mostly silver linings. The reality of the Hortonworks release is both positive and negative, and it’s far more indicative of the difficulty of building an open source business than it is of any particular Hortonworks failings. For better and for worse, Hadoop has long been the poster child for big data.

The U.S. Commerce Department has introduced the 19 government and industry executives who make up the agency’s newly formed data advisory council. “Together, they will help us make our data easier to access and use, and maximize the return of data investments for entrepreneurs, government, businesses, communities and taxpayers,” Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker said Wednesday. Commerce Data Advisory Council members will each serve a two-year term and advise agency leaders on open data management, public-private collaboration and policy development. The advisers hold information technology experience and come from the local government, nonprofit, academic and commercial sectors.

This week’s heavy snowstorm in Washington DC seems to have brought out the rebels in its residents. This pair went sledding on the west lawn of the Capitol building, despite a 19th century regulation which expressly forbids anyone from treating the grounds like a “playground” – snow or no snow. They managed to get a few runs in before the Capitol’s special police force arrived and put a stop to the sledding. The Capitol sits on around 274 acres of land, and the building itself sits at the top of a small hill, which makes it especially enticing to snowsport-lovers. The sledders have earned support from high levels of government, however.

Hadoop heavyweights Cloudera Inc. and Hortonworks, Inc. were at each other’s throats again this week, as they continued a lively debate around the merits of what the latter company is calling the new “governing body” of Hadoop’s development, the so-called Open Data Platform (ODP). For those out of the loop, the ODP was established just over two weeks ago at the behest of Hortonworks and its main ally Pivotal, Inc., which simultaneously open-sourced a bunch of its own proprietary software to throw into what it’s calling the new “standard” for Hadoop. But Cloudera, together with niche Hadoop vendor MapR Technologies, Inc., vehemently denounced the group as a rival to the Apache Software Foundation.
