Most of us have heard of a “hackathon” before, but not many people know what it actually is. The word “hacker” might conjure the image of a person who goes into your computer and steals your personal information. But hacking can also be for good. A hackathon is a collaborative event where dozens of people with both technical and non-technical expertise get together and find creative solutions to various problems, using technology. CBC Montreal is teaming up with International Startup Festival, Notman House and Open North to host its first ever community hackathon. Taking place from March 13 to 15 at Maison Radio-Canada, the hackathon will bring people together with the goal of making us more open, accessible and interactive.

The National Institutes of Health announced a big data portal to speed the development of predictive models and effective therapies for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The new data sharing and analysis web portal is an initiative of the Accelerating Medicines Partnership (AMP) – a joint effort among NIH, 10 biopharmaceutical companies and several nonprofit organizations  –to discover novel, clinically relevant treatments and to develop biomarkers to help validate existing therapies. Developed by Sage Bionetworks, a Seattle-based non-profit promoting open science, the AMP AD Knowledge Portal will house big data that  the multidisciplinary academic groups will generate over the five years of the program.

The Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA) and the World Data System (WDS)–both Interdisciplinary Bodies of the International Council for Science–and the Research Data Alliance (RDA) are pleased to announce the signing of Memoranda of Understanding outlining their collaboration. Coordination of their efforts is important since each organization focuses on different but complementary aspects of research data: CODATA on advocacy, policy, and process; WDS on data provision and stewardship; and RDA on bottom-up implementation of data sharing tools and practices. For hundreds of years, the publication of theories and the data on which they are based have been the engines of scientific progress and the resulting societal advancement.

The city will spend $10.2 million for smart bus technology on all Edmonton Transit buses so they give real-time location information and stop announcements. Photograph by: John Lucas , Edmonton Journal EDMONTON – Edmonton’s live transit data are now available through a sleek, easy-to use third-party app, but not because the city chose to publish it. The Montreal-based company Transit App hacked the city’s system to scrape the data and started publishing it on their own app late last week. “We’re pretty excited to get the data out there,” said Jake Sion, the company’s business developer, hoping the stunt will push cities to prioritize making all of this kind of data available for anyone’s use.

Treasury Board President Tony Clement’s dire warning about why the government can’t release certain electronic data under access to information requests seems to have left his senior staff mystified, newly disclosed documents show. In an interview late last year, Clement said that some database requests under the Access to Information Act can’t be released in their original electronic format because the numbers could be manipulated and “create havoc.” At the time, Clement was responding to complaints that requests for electronic data often produced records in paper form that couldn’t  be scrutinized by a computer for patterns.
