WANdisco has announced that it has accepted an invitation to join the Open Data Platform Initiative. The ODP is an industry effort to promote and advance the state of Apache Hadoop and Big Data technologies for the enterprise. WANdisco will join existing members IBM, EMC, Hortonworks, VMware, Verizon and Splunk along with several others. Hadoop is about to get a lot less complicated. A number of the largest big data vendors, including IBM, Hortonworks and Pivotal, have joined forces to standardise the base platform for the open source software. It is hoped the Open Data Platform announced in February will reduce the work required on the part of enterprises to build and maintain complex Hadoop-based data analysis systems. Establishing a common library for Hadoop will take the pain out of understanding how the framework and its distribution packages integrate with a firm’s existing infrastructure.

It’s a visceral reminder of the power of images and the power of looking at dry numbers in human terms. For Mike Evans, the map below was a holy shit visualization. Properties in yellow are in tax distress. Those in orange are under tax foreclosure. Those in red have been foreclosed. In 2014, 50% of properties in the city of Detroit were in danger of foreclosure, being foreclosed, or owned by the city. That’s a frightening statistic. But seeing what it looks like on the map makes the scale of the problem more visceral.

Who are the candidates standing in your constituency? Crowd sourcing seems the obvious way to build an online database of PPCs, of all parties and none, across the country, and that is exactly what is happening on YourNextMP.  Please check out your own constituency and submit, or correct, information about the Lib Dem candidate. Some time ago I helped them to sort out my own constituency of Kingston & Surbiton, which appeared to have two candidates, one called Edward Davey and the other called Ed Davey. I got a pleasant response from a real human. You can also download the complete list of candidates across the UK from the site for free. YourNextMP is a project by Democracy Club, which is run by volunteers committed to making public data easily available, using open data techniques.

Næste aktivitet var henlagt til Café Mellemrummets lokaler, der venligt var blevet lånt til os fra Mellemfolkeligt Samvirke. Her var der “datasprint”, dvs. en dataworkshop med crowdsourcede folketingskandidat-data som omdrejningspunkten. Deltagerne fik først en kort introduktion til basal dataanalyse efterfulgt af gruppearbejde med dataene: En oversigt over samtlige opstillede kandidater til det kommende folketingsvalg, som en gruppe frivillige har lagt kræfter i at samle i ugerne op til Open Data Day (læs mere om det på vores blog her og her). Resultatet af gruppearbejdet var bl.a. visualiseringer og kvalitative analyser – samt diskussion om de overordnede perspektiver det giver at have adgang til dataene i åben form.

Open Pompei is a European Commission-funded project that aims to promote a culture of transparency and open data in the archaeology profession involving social innovators, civic hackers, social enterprises, with a focus on Pompeii. Recently the project organised a free School of Archeological Data, STVDIVM AD OBSERVABILIA APERIENDA in collaboration of the General Secretariat of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage,and the Superintendency of Pompeii.  The school (STVDIVM for short) was held at the Auditorium of Pompeii, from 6 to 8 March, 2015.  It was opened by Julian Richards who gave a keynote about Open Data in European Archaeology and ARIADNE.

Today’s pioneers are far more likely to over-egg the potential of their technology, making grandiose claims that are used to beat the industry when those promises show signs of falling flat: it happened with the web, and television, radio, motion pictures and the telegraph before it. Sometimes it’s a case of waiting as the rest of the world plays catch up, but sometimes there’s a genuine need to slow down. We’ve certainly seen both sides to this trend in the emerging big data industry.
