On Monday, Apple announced the upcoming release of ResearchKit, which will allow researchers to gather data from iPhone users to help further medical research, Reuters reports (Steenhuysen, Reuters, 3/9). ResearchKit is an open-source software platform that includes disease-specific applications that patients can use to track their symptoms. It can be used to gather iPhone users’ data and find potential study participants (Belluz, Vox, 3/9). Users will have the option of participating in studies and indicating certain data sharing preferences. If users allow, researchers also will be able to access an iPhones accelerometer, gyroscope, GPS and microphone sensors to study participants’: Researchers also will be able to access data from Apple’s HealthKit (Verel, MedCity News, 3/9).

Startup Vapor I/O emerged from stealth mode this week with its vision of a hyper-collapsed datacenter that seeks to add intelligence to the equation by including workloads “as a critical data point” for calculating efficiency in heretofore disconnected datacenters. The goal is improved datacenter management in an era of agile hybrid clouds while delivering intelligence to the network edge, Cole Crawford, Vapor I/O founder and CEO, stressed in an interview. All will be needed as datacenters scale to handle an emerging data torrent via the Internet of Everything. Montreal is looking to change the rules and regulations in order to release more of the city’s data, says the vice-president of Montreal’s executive committee. Harout Chitilian says releasing data is a priority for the city, as outlined in the $23 million dollar “Smart City” plan — and says it’s planning on “removing all roadblocks” to make that happen. In some cases, that could mean changing laws and taking away privacy safeguards. He said the city will release details of a strategic plan, which will include details on how it will release open data, at the end of March. “We identified that data is a must,” Chitilian told CBC. “Basically, we cannot live without it and we cannot live without having a game plan, and also having a focus on extracting, analyzing and adding value to data.

None of Montreal’s West Island municipalities have released their city’s data online, which could end up costing the municipalities in the long run, according to an advocate for open data. Sébastien Gauthier, spokesman for the City of Dorval says the city is not opposed to open data, but says releasing data to the public is not on its agenda. “We’ve been monitoring the situation and maybe it’s something we’ll be looking at for the future, but right now, we’re not quite there here in Dorval.” In fact, he says the city’s number one digital priority is creating a Facebook page for the city. “First steps first — we don’t even have social media here yet and that for us is a priority.” Dorval isn’t alone. None of the municipalities on the West Island have released their data publicly.

The New Zealand government has launched an API portal to encourage businesses to integrate with government services. New Zealand has one of the more advanced government digital strategies in the world, and the initiative is a strong, early industry example of how governments can communicate the value of APIs to industry. The launch highlights the emerging challenge for governments to ensure that their APIs are discoverable and usable by businesses and adds to the various models used by governments to enable API discoverability. The New Zealand government website, Better APIs for Business, is part of a national strategy to make it easier for businesses to grow without government bureaucracy or other barriers slowing them down.

‘Open Data 500’ to examine how government data sets are being used The New York University’s GovLab and the federal Department of Communications have embarked on a study of how Australian organisations are employing government data sets. The ‘Open Data 500’ study was launched today at the Locate15 conference. It aims to provide a basis for assessing the value of open data and encourage the development of new businesses based on open data, as well as encourage discussion about how to make government data more useful to businesses and not-for-profit organisations. The study is part of a series of studies taking place under the auspices of the OD500 Global Network.
