The top CODE entries will go on to compete for $40,000 in prizes TORONTO, March 6, 2015 /CNW/ – Today, the hosts of the Canadian Open Data Experience (CODE) XMG Studio Inc., and the Government of Canada, announced the 15 finalists in the second Canadian Open Data Experience hackathon, which was held across the country during the weekend of International Open Data Day, February 21-22nd. A record-breaking 1303 participants competed in the 48 hour event, making this Canada’s largest-ever hackathon.  They created 125 submissions, another record.  Submissions were selected for the top 15 based on the following criteria: user experience, use of open data and market potential. The 15 entries, listed in no particular order, are the top-rated applications in their categories.

With spring and summer vacation season around the corner, the Obama administration is announcing a digital initiative for tourists Friday: An app to guide them to parks, forests, campsites, rivers and other federal property they may not know about. The Interior Department, working with the Department of Agriculture, will host a “Hackathon” on April 11 and 12 for web developers and other entrepreneurs outside government to design user-friendly, mobile apps for travelers. The idea is to improve access to the vast empire of federally-managed land that’s open to the public, by using a trove of data the agencies has compiled and made public. “Honestly, the sky is the limit,” said Tim Fullerton, Interior’s director of digital strategy.

The dataset from the ATLAS Higgs Machine Learning Challenge has been released on the CERN Open Data Portal The Challenge, which ran from May to September 2014, was to develop an algorithm that improved the detection of the Higgs boson signal. The specific sample used simulated Higgs particles into two tau particles inside the ATLAS detector. The downloadable sample was provided for participants at the host platform on Kaggle’s website. With almost 1,785 teams competing, the event was a huge success. Participants applied and developed cutting edge Machine Learning techniques, which have been shown to be better than existing traditional high-energy physics tools.

Arguments in favor include leveraging investments in research, reducing the need to collect new data, addressing new research questions by reusing or combining extant data, and reproducing research, which would lead to greater accountability, transparency, and less fraud. Arguments against data sharing rarely are expressed in public fora, so popular is the idea. Much of the scholarship on data practices attempts to understand the socio-technical barriers to sharing, with goals to design infrastructures, policies, and cultural interventions that will overcome these barriers. However, data sharing and reuse are common practice in only a few fields.

Telefónica, Orange, Engineering and Atos have joined forces on an initiative towards the creation of the FIWARE Open Source Community to foster and support the evolution of standards for Smart Cities. FIWARE, an open source platform integrating a number of components making it easier to develop smart application, was created through a Public-Private Partnership between the European Commission and more than 40 organisations.
