IT seems that 2015 is the year for new things at IT Namibia as within a month of a very successful first Python Conference, the Namibian Business Innovation Institute (NBII) and Southern Africa Innovation Support (SAIS), in partnership with 1Billion Africa and Namibia Statistics Agency, hosted Namibia’s first Open Data Innovation Hackathon recently. NBII hosted the two-day programme at the Polytechnic of Namibia and at its Innovation Village. The programme saw individuals with a passion for development and a desire for progress meeting, learning about open data and developing ideas based on what they had learnt during the course of the week. Open data is very much what it sounds like – open data.

Dr. DJ Patil named first Chief Data Scientist and will help shape data policies and practices. The White House Wednesday named Dr. DJ Patil as the country’s first chief data scientist and deputy chief technology officer for data policy. As Wired points out, there is perhaps no one better suited for this new complex role, since Patil is often credited with coining the term ‘data science.’ According to the & Wall Street Journal, the term data scientist was rarely heard a few years ago but now appears in roughly 36,000 help-wanted ads on LinkedIn. At a growing number of companies, a data scientist is assigned to discover lucrative insights in increasingly large volumes of data — usually by formulating statistical algorithms and encoding them in software.

Telefónica, Orange, Engineering and Atos have announced a new partnership during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, to build and support standards for smart cities through the FIWARE Open Source Community. The new partnership hopes that standard application programming interfaces (APIs) developed in the open source community, combined with standard data models developed by cities and app developers, will ensure portability and interoperability of smart city apps. According to a joint statement, this will develop smart city apps for different cities at the same time, thus “creating a market large enough to attract startups and small enterprises who will create new innovative services for citizens and businesses in urban areas”.

Building efficient government digital services that truly benefit the general public is a civic infrastructure project as important as building the National Grid or the Victorians constructing sewers under London. That’s what Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude MP told the audience during his keynote address at TechUK’s Public Services 2030 Conference, in what’s likely to be one of his last speeches ahead of the May general election. Maude described how under his tenure the Cabinet Office is “modernising the way that government provides its services to the public” and how Whitehall’s new operating model is evolving into what he described as “government-as-a-platform”.

Alibaba‘s cloud services arm Aliyun is preparing to open its first overseas cloud data center in Silicon Valley. The Chinese tech giant is making a global push, with the data center a first important step. The data center in Santa Clara, California, announced Wednesday, will provide a variety of cloud computing services. It will initially focus on Chinese companies based in the U.S., with the plan to gradually expand services and products to international clients later this year. Alibaba has a robust set of cloud services, including Amazon Web Services-like Infrastructure-as-a-Service offerings, as well as big data analytics software for online marketers, also delivered as a service.
