At this year’s FutureEverything festival, held on 26-27 February in Manchester, United Kingdom, 13 finalists for the annual Apps for Europe (Apps4EU) best open data startup award gathered together to make their final pitches at the second international business lounge. The finalists were drawn from the local business lounges which took place across Europe in 2014, and the annual Apps4EU online open data app competition.  The shortlisted projects provided an international mix of applications using open data in transport, finance, environment protection, (open) data management, tourism and cultural heritage. One finalist was Europeana Beacon, the winner of the Hack4Pisa event in October 2014.

QV have responded via e-mail to my post below. It seems I did not correctly understand the situation and QV’s role in the supply and use of property sales data. Here’s their response: “QV is concerned that a number of inaccuracies have been published in the NZ Herald online opinion piece by Aaron Schiff today: 1. Aaron Schiff states:”QV (a State-Owned Enterprise) has control over this crucial data.” This is incorrect. QV does not have control over this ‘crucial data’. It is in fact owned by the local authorities who can and do sell it to any company that wants to buy it. 2. Aaron Schiff states “Such analysis is very difficult and costly for anyone except QV and its affiliates and …most notably QV uses it to work out rating valuations.” This is also inaccurate.

The Open Research Data: Implications for Science and Society Conference is taking place in Warsaw, Poland from May 28-29, 2015 The organisers have published the call for abstracts and the deadline for abstract submission is March 31, 2015. The conference aims to provide a forum for a broad debate on all issues related to opening research data. The topics covered will include: RDA Secretary General, Mark Parsons will be presenting at the event. Proposals for short presentations about open research data are now welcome. Presentation abstracts should be submitted by e-mail to conference@pon.edu.pl The official language of the conference is English. The length of an abstract should not exceed 400 words. Each presentation will last 10 minutes and will be followed by a 5-minute discussion.

In the latest example of a federal agency dipping into the private sector pool for its technological needs, Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker revealed Wednesday the 19 members who will make up the department’s newly created Data Advisory Council. Member of the council hail from some of the nation’s leading tech companies — from IBM’s chief information strategist, Steve Adler, and LinkedIn co-founder Allen Blue, to Amazon Web Services’ general manager, CJ Moses, and Google’s director of open sources in engineering, Christopher DiBona. Each member will serve two terms, and will be responsible for helping to revamp the council’s data initiatives, with an end goal of making the information easier for the public to access and use, according to a Commerce Department press release.

Though David Eaves, co-founder of app maker ReCollect, has helped foster open data as a tool for both private enterprise and nonprofits, he has a passion for government’s use of open data. “There’s just an enormous deficiency in just getting governments to share more effectively,” Eaves said. “And that for me is the real promise — to just get governments to work more effectively internally — that we’re just now starting to realize.” While Eaves considers open data a force for good, he does note its pitfalls, citing the practice of gerrymandering, or redrawing political districts for partisan gain, as an example. “There’s still an enormous responsibility that comes from society when this stuff gets made available,” Eaves said.

Data.gov is the central clearinghouse for federal open data, including hosting the Public Data Listings required under the 2013 Federal Open Data Policy, but Data.gov also hosts state, local, and tribal government sources voluntarily. As of this writing Data.gov has the open data catalogs of 10 cities, 3 counties, and 8 states open data catalogs piped to Data.gov, in addition to many local geospatial data sources, but we know there are many more open data catalogs out there! Getting your local government open data plugged into Data.gov is likely easier than you think. BARCELONA, Spain–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Telefónica announced today that it has presented an end-to-end network-functions virtualization (NFV) instantiation demonstration in collaboration with Brocade, Cyan, Intel and Red Hat at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona. The demo uses the network virtualization framework based on the ETSI ISG NFV approach and developed by the Telefónica NFV Reference Lab. It showcases a Brocade VNF service chain deployed using standard Topology and Orchestration Specification for Cloud Applications (TOSCA) information models through the enhanced Cyan Blue Planet NFV Orchestration engine onto a network virtual function infrastructure.

With approximately 88,000 residents, Reading is the fifth largest city in Pennsylvania. Compared to the Commonwealth’s biggest cities, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Reading is quite small but ­– population not withstanding – it is doing some big things in open data. In fact, the recent launch of Reading’s open data portal, is only the second open data initiative in Pennsylvania. In 2011, Philadelphia launched a community open data portal – Open Data Philly. Reading Mayor Spencer Vaughn sees the City’s newly launched portal as a next step toward greater municipal transparency and accountability. Reading, like many American cities, was hit hard by the recent recession and has been forced to make tough cuts to government staff and services.

Dedicated government gateway opens access to wealth of new data. Roadmap being finalised, following on from industry-wide consultations that close 6th March. Western Australia is finalising the blueprint for open government, together with a focus on being “open by default” and streamlining access to untapped data and services. The administration’s open data roadmap, being developed by the Department of Premier and Cabinet, builds on widespread feedback around the storage, access and management of data. This feedback, being finalised 6th March, lays the groundwork for a better-integrated open data policy. This reform makes it easier for citizens, industries and research bodies to access information in a readily-accessible, transparent and cost-effective environment.
