QV have responded via e-mail to my post below. It seems I did not correctly understand the situation and QV’s role in the supply and use of property sales data. Here’s their response: “QV is concerned that a number of inaccuracies have been published in the NZ Herald online opinion piece by Aaron Schiff today: 1. Aaron Schiff states:”QV (a State-Owned Enterprise) has control over this crucial data.” This is incorrect. QV does not have control over this ‘crucial data’. It is in fact owned by the local authorities who can and do sell it to any company that wants to buy it. 2. Aaron Schiff states “Such analysis is very difficult and costly for anyone except QV and its affiliates and …most notably QV uses it to work out rating valuations.” This is also inaccurate.
