FLOOD DAMAGE: Residents in Sudbury’s Minnow Lake area are cleaning up after a water main broke over the weekend. The burst happened on Saturday morning and flooded several homes. Anastasia Rioux’s rec room and backyard were damaged by the water. She says early estimates show repairs could cost more than $50,000. OPEN DATA: The City of Greater Sudbury has joined a growing number of governments by launching an open data program. This sees internal information about city operations posted on a public website to be used by citizens. NEWBORN HEALTH: A new report paints an alarming picture of the number of babies born with neonatal abstinence syndrome in northern Ontario. The syndrome can occur in babies who’s pregnant mothers were dependent or addicted to opioids.

But the journey of that information being delivered to you is long and sophisticated, involving vast amounts of data and complex scientific observations. In the UK, that responsibility falls to the Met Office, a trading fund of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. Headquartered in Exeter and employing around 1,900 people, the Met Office is recognised as one of the world’s most accurate forecasters.

It’s once again time for us to proudly announce the establishment of a new batch of Open Knowledge Local Groups, founded by community leaders in Macedonia, Pakistan, Portugal and Ukraine, which we hereby welcome warmly into the ever-growing family of Local Groups. This brings the total number of Local Groups and Chapters up to a whopping 58! In this blog post we would like to introduce the founders of these new groups and invite everyone to join the community in these countries. In Macedonia, the Local Group has been founded by Bardhyl Jashari, who is the director of Metamorphosis Foundation. His professional interests are mainly in the sphere of new technologies, media, civic activism, e-­government and participation.

Monitoring is one of the crucial aspects to make Open Data initiatives grow. Although the exact measure of the openness level of governments is almost impossible, there are some initiatives that show an overview of the interest in Open Data in different countries around the world. We can highlight some popular Open Data rankings, measuring different things but sharing the same goal. In February 2012, we launched the first version of the PSI Scoreboard, our crowdsourced initiative to measure the status of PSI re-use throughout the 28 EU countries; in 2013, the World Wide Web Foundation started to analyse open data readiness, implementation and impact across 86 countries on the Open Data Barometer.

In cities around the nation and across California, the civic tech industry is having a dramatic and immediate impact on citizens’ lives by helping government work better. This vibrant sector is not only creating jobs, but also leveraging technology to foster greater transparency and accountability, increase civic engagement, and help government provide better services. The value is evident to governments, but investors too have started to take notice. In fact, last week, California-based Accela, maker of civic engagement software for governments, announced it had closed $143.5 million in new funding– the largest investment in a civic tech startup ever. Many of these companies are built on government data.

Crowdsourcing company CrowdFlower allows businesses to tap into a distributed workforce of 5 million contributors for basic tasks like sentiment analysis. Today it’s releasing some of that data to the public through its new Data for Everyone initiative. Founder and CEO Lukas Biewald (a friend of mine from college) told me that last year, the company quietly began asking some of its customers if they were willing to make the data they gathered through CrowdFlower public, and now it’s officially launching the initiative with its first batch of data sets. Biewald said this grew out of his own frustrations about the lack of open data during his time as a grad student and as a scientist at search startup Powerset.

The City of Greater Sudbury has joined a growing number of governments to launch an open data program. This sees internal information about city operations posted on a public website to be used by citizens. The first release in Sudbury is three data sets on the city transit system, including the real-time movements of buses. Lily Noble from the Friends of Greater Sudbury is encouraged by the release, but said it’s less useful, since the city has already created a smartphone application letting riders know how far away their bus is. The first release of open data includes the GPS co-ordinates for all 13 bus stops in the city.
