Cloudera CEO Tom Reilly doesn’t often mince words when it comes to describing to his competition in the Hadoop space, or Cloudera’s position among those other companies. In October 2013, Reilly told me he didn’t consider Hortonworks or MapR to be Cloudera’s real competition, but rather larger data-management companies such as IBM and EMC-VMware spinoff Pivotal. And now, Reilly says, “We declare victory over at least one of our competitors.” He was referring to Pivotal, and the Open Data Platform, or ODP, alliance it helped launched a couple weeks ago along with Hortonworks, IBM, Teradata and several other big data vendors.

The 5D Smart San Francisco 2030 District, a joint undertaking of the city of San Francisco, software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform provider CityZenith and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, is moving from a prototype to a deployment state, according to its developers. The project began when CityZenith approached the city in search of a pilot project for its data visualization platform that consolidates city data in an easy-to-use, single point-of-view.  The firm’s 5D Smart City platform is a cloud-based, SaaS solution that maps data created by cities –  including open data, information from devices comprising the Internet of Things, machine-to-machine communications and social media – to an, interactive 3D interface designed for easy access by non-technicians.

Pivotal has just hired engineer Benjamin Black — the regular Amazon employee who co-wrote the paper that would become cloud titan Amazon Web Services all the way back in 2003. Black most recently worked at Microsoft, where he helped build Office 365, its answer to Google Apps, and prior to that founded a startup called Boundary, which monitored computer networks. Wired first reported the news last week. Black becomes the third such cloud pioneer to join Pivotal recently, joining OpenStack co-founder Joshua McKenty and Puppet Labs co-founder Andrew Shafer. These are important people in the world of cloud computing — a major movement that is reshaping how companies spend money on technology.

Since 2013, Australian governments at federal, state and territory levels have talked about the benefits of open data. Each government is taking steps to open up more and more government data to the public. The common rhetoric is that making this data readily available will lead to innovation and build the digital economy in Australia. I agree. PSMA Australia is 100% supportive of maximising access to data for the benefit of the economy. In fact, this was the catalyst that led the governments of Australia to conceive our organisation in 1992, and ultimately led to the formation of PSMA as a company in 2001.

Users can see results from other Australian data portals on main open government data website The data.gov.au website has integrated its datasets with data.sa.gov.au, allowing users to search datasets from both sites using a shared search repository. The data.gov.au team has created CKAN extension to the website, which will allow users to click on a ‘Results from other Australian Data Portals’ at the end of their search results. CKAN is an open source data management platform, which data.gov.au moved to in mid-2013. The South Australian open government data website is the first to be integrated into the main website, data.gov.au, and more data portals will be added in future. Data.gov.au currently has 5,275 datasets, with the integration of data.sa bumping it up 5,763.

The Hawaiʻi Institute for Geophysics and Planetology ( ) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa launched a website—Hawaiʻi Groundwater and Geothermal Resources Center ( )—which consolidates existing information and introduces an abundance of new data related to these natural resources. researchers, Nicole Lautze and Donald Thomas, led the creation of this resource center to organize and publicly disseminate data on Hawaiʻi’s groundwater and geothermal resources from private and public agencies and organizations. “In bringing together this wealth of information, we hope to facilitate innovative research on Hawaiʻi’s groundwater and renewable energy resources,” said Lautze.

Not only is Yelp helping people find great restaurants, it’s also helping health inspectors target offenders and pushing restaurants to clean up their act. Today, cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Evanston, Ill., and Raleigh, N.C. have health sanitation scores posted on Yelp. One of the first initiatives began in 2012, with Yelp partnering with San Francisco and New York City to develop the Local Inspector Value-Entry Specification, an open data standard developed by Code for America that allows municipalities to publish restaurant inspection information to Yelp. The partnership was announced in January 2013 by San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee. Yet, due to technology issues, not every city has been able to post scores.
