This week the Data as Culture team are excitedly running around installing ‘Thomson & Craighead at the ODI’, a solo exhibition of existing work by our first ever Open Data Institute Artists in Residence, who will also be working on a new concept for a brand new (as of yet unknown) work. Jon Thomson and Alison Craighead will be with us until June 2015 during which time they will receive unprecedented access to the ODI’s staff, knowledge and networks. After running open calls for artists and curators in previous years, this year we wanted to open up the ODI itself. We felt that artists would be exciting interrogators.

Many of the traditional tools and methods used today will remain in use tomorrow: controlled vocabularies, content classification, faceted search and discovery. But the ways that these tools and methods are implemented are evolving rapidly, and we need to be alert and adaptive to change.

Property crime starts with a dash of recovered stolen automobiles, a splash of noise complaints, but hold the picnic tables. That’s the lesson the city is taking away from a new contextual analysis project, looking at all of the factors that lead to crime in Edmonton. “There is nothing individually that is highly correlated with crime across the city. It’s the interaction of crime and environment and interaction of a multitude of different factors,” said Kris Andreychuk, who oversees the downtown neighbourhood empowerment team and helped on the analytics project. The new project took 233 different datasets and combined all of the information to help map some of the factors that are strongly correlated with higher levels of property and personal crime.

Evanston’s open data portal contains information and data from various city departments. The city launched the site a week ago in an effort to improve transparency. Evanston launched OpenEvanston.org last week, a one-stop data portal for information on the activities of different government departments, in an effort to improve transparency and efficiency. The site launched Feb. 23 after months of development, digital services coordinator Luke Stowe said. The project is part of an open data movement that seeks to increase availability and access of government records and information to the public. Many big cities have implemented similar systems, but Evanston is early in the wave of smaller cities to do so, Stowe said. “This is an extraordinary project,” said Ald.

SINGAPORE – More data will soon be available for free on the Singapore Department of Statistics’ website from Sunday. This includes including approximately 5,000 more data series, bringing the total data series available for free access to about 12,000. The data series span multiple topics within the two broad themes of population and economy. They can be accessed on the SingStat website (www.singstat.gov.sg) and theGovernment’s Open Data Portal (www.data.gov.sg) from March 1. The move is in line with the Government’s intention to make more data available to the public as Singapore builds a Smart Nation, SingStat said in a statement on Friday.

SINGAPORE: More data will now be available for free on the SingStat website from Mar 1, 2015, the Singapore Department of Statistics (DOS) announced on Friday (Feb 27). In a press release, the DOS said that approximately 5,000 more data series will be available for free on both the SingStat website and the Government’s Open Data portal from Mar 1. This brings the total number of data series available on the SingStat website to around 12,000. The data series span across multiple topics, under the two broad themes of population and economy.

The University of Southampton will be represented among the keynote speakers at the launch of Innovation is GREAT in Tokyo this Friday. The GREAT campaign, which is aimed at building British prosperity through innovation and creative business partnerships, will be launched by HRH The Duke of Cambridge during his visit to Japan.
