A pair of startups that spun out of research at Johns Hopkins University reported seven-figure raises: In cybersecurity funding news, Terbium Labs reported selling $1.6 million in equity in an SEC filing. The South Baltimore-based company makes Matchlight, a product that uses fingerprinting technology to protect data. Baltimore is moving on a list that ranks startup activity in U.S. metro areas. Baltimore-Towson was up 2 spots to rank 17th in this year’s list, resting us nicely between Seattle and Riverside, Calif. The list is compiled by the Kauffman Foundation. Check out the full list here. The fledgling Center for Government Excellence brought another data dynamo onboard.

Ben Wellington, who runs the popular blog I Quant NY, has harnessed the power of data to do many things for New Yorkers: discover when rush hour occurs (turns out, it lasts far longer than an hour), where not to swim, and the City’s most dangerous intersections for bicyclists. In this week’s featured ODTV video, Wellington provides the data version of “Behind the Music,” explaining the origins of data about New York. In the case of the data that led to Wellington’s map of New York’s rush “hour,” the information became available when a man walking into the Taxi and Limousine Commission with a brand new hard drive and a FOIL request. We can do better at releasing data and making it available online, Wellington believes.

We started the week out talking about hackathons in Detroit, and we’ll finish the week the same way, although #hack4detroit has a twist: Participants are using the city of Detroit’s open data portal to create apps that will benefit city residents or help streamline operations. Automation Alley’s #hack4detroit event starts at 7 p.m. tonight at Grand Circus downtown. At stake is a $5,000 grand prize; the apps will be judged by Beth Niblock, chief information officer for the city of Detroit; Sean Hurwitz, CEO of Pixo; Brian Balasia, CEO of Digerati; and Will McDowell, business analyst at Detroit Labs. “We’re really excited to be working with Automation Alley again this year,” said Garlin Gilchrist, Detroit’s deputy technology director for community engagement.

Over the past two weeks, Fifa has faced mounting pressure to radically improve its transparency and governance in the wake of corruption allegations. David Cameron has called for reforms including expanding the use of open data. Open data is information made available by governments, businesses and other groups for anyone to read, use and share. Data.gov.uk was launched as the home of UK open government data in January 2010 and now has almost 21,000 published datasets, including on government spending. Allowing citizens to freely access data related to the institutions that govern them is essential to a well-functioning democratic society. It is the first step towards holding leaders to account for failures and wrongdoing.

State Senator Dr. Richard Pan (D-Sacramento) said his bill to establish a statewide data portal will save state agencies money and foster economic development. Senators approved SB 573 authored by Pan, whose district includes Elk Grove, by a 28-11 vote on June 4. Pan said his bill would create a chief data officer who would create a more robust statewide open data portal by 2017. Each state agency would designate a data coordinator to report to the chief data officer. “California is the nation’s leader in technology innovation and development, but we lag behind in creating a single, efficient data portal that can help data-driven innovation flourish in our state,” Pan said in a statement. “By providing broad access to government data, great opportunities are made possible.

Editor’s note: As CityCamp unfolds this weekend, blogger Ginny Ghezzo reflects on the kickoff event for a related event – the 2015 NC Datapalooza.(For more on CityCamp, check the links included with this post.) RALEIGH, N.C. – [A few weeks back], I attended the kickoff event for the 2015 NC Datapalooza. This was an all-day event focused on forming ideas and gathering data. Just like a bunch of musicians gathered in one place, this was a jam, a data jam that ended in presentations and winners. The key criteria was use of open data, potential impact, formation of a business plan and indication on how they would progress. I was especially enamored by the panel which consisted of data experts in government and health.

アップルが開発者のために公開した文書によると、iOSの将来バージョンでは、Safariの拡張機能をサポートするらしいです。
PC用ブラウザではおなじみの拡張機能ですが、この拡張機能の目的としてアドブロック（広告をブロックする機能）の実現が主な目的だと思われます。

広告は、利用者をいらいらさせることも多いため、平均的な利用者は、おそらくこの新機能についてはかなり満足するでしょう。広告へのアクセス情報が広告主のプロファイル構築のために収集されていることを知っているユーザはプライバシーの問題を気にするでしょう。アップル最高経営責任者（CEO）のTim Cookは、プライバシー保護を製品のセールスポイントにすることを明らかにしています。アップルはデータ収集事業とは一線を引くということでしょうか。広告を野放しにすることは、明らかにGoogleやFacebookのようなライバルに燃料を供給していますからね。

しかし、一方でインターネットの情報やアプリが無料で利用できるのは広告のおかげでもあります。GoogleやFacebookとのこれからの戦い方は要注目です。
