Researchers, journalists, students and Bloggers now have an easy access to visual components available to embed into webpages thanks to a widget the U.S. Energy Information Administration released today. Pulling its information from the EIA’s application programming interface, users can embed maps, line charts, pie charts and bar graphs, all of which will configure to ensure information is always up-to-date. Available the in the Open Data section of the EIA websites, the visuals provide interactive and use-selected information. One such feature includes maps that retrieve information from the website of a specific topic, complete with pop-up graphs and data. For example, users could embed U.S. petroleum production data in an interactive world map.

This report is one of the two text outputs of the 7.1 task which aims at creating a stable best practice network in order to connect public bodies, researchers and companies to access and use the solutions identified in simple manner, accelerating the publication of open data and its sustainable and profitable use. Both reports will jointly lead to design a suitable Governance model which will cover the governance rules for the partners in the SmartOpenData infrastructure. The deliverable will also lead the collaboration with other projects and institutions and connections with relevant national and European standardisation bodies. To help CIOs and IT leaders assess critical strategic technologies and plan their enterprises’ or agencies’ IT roadmaps, research firm Gartner has identified the 10 most important technology trends for government in 2015. Spending by national, federal and local governments worldwide on technology products and services is forecast to decline 1.8 percent from $439 billion to $431 billion in 2015, growing to $475.5 billion by 2019. Gartner research director Rick Howard said organizational culture, legacy IT systems and business processes, stretched IT budgets, and the lack of critical IT skills are among the inhibitors for government CIOs when evaluating and selecting new technology or sourcing options.

In an information and knowledge-based economy that Rwanda is increasingly turning into, Open Data is a precious national resource and a strategic asset of the Government of Rwanda. The two day workshop was organized by the Ministry of Youth and ICT in partnership with World Bank and other stakeholders; the retreat brings together experts from various institutions that will champion the policy, data-holding/producing institutions and institutions that stand to benefit from an Open Data initiative.

Government is learning what open data means one step at a time. And on June 11, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) took a large step forward in its own open data efforts by releasing a new data visualization tool that allows the average person to answer questions about his or her region’s history of natural and man-made disasters. Users can filter through raw data to learn about the number of disaster declarations made – events like fires, storms, snow, typhoons and terrorist attacks – by state, county or tribal nation. The tool has graphs and charts demonstrating financial costs associated with the events, along with links to FEMA resources that encourage disaster preparation.

The United Nations has proactively researched and promoted open government data across the globe for close to five years now. The Open Data Institute maintains that open data can help “unlock supply, generate demand, and create and disseminate knowledge to address local and global issues.” McKinsey & Company report that “seven sectors alone could generate more than $3 trillion a year in additional value as a result of open data.” There is no doubt that open data is an important public policy area—one that is here to stay. Yet, for all the grand promises, scratch beneath the surface and one finds a remarkable paucity of hard empirical facts about what is and isn’t happening on the ground—in the real world of cities where most of us increasingly live and work.

Just when it seemed that the hype around smart cities had reached a plateau, a new tech behemoth — and one with more street cred than most when it comes to genuine disruption — has decided to join the party. The news officially came on Thursday, when Google Co-Founder and CEO Larry Page wrote on the Silicon Valley tech company’s own social media network that Google has made a long-term smart cities bet with a “relatively modest investment” in a new company called Sidewalk Labs. Details so far are scant when it comes to specific technologies the company headed by former New York City Deputy Mayor Daniel Doctoroff might look to pursue.

In one of the first opportunities to get an inside look at a business built on technology and data, I recently had an enjoyable conversation with Russell Foltz-Smith, VP data platform at TrueCar. He explained to me how the US car market works from the buyer’s perspective. It turns out that in many situations, the prospective buyer experiences a lot of frustration figuring out the final buy price of a new vehicle. This is for a variety of reasons but principally, buyers are not always aware of add-ons the dealer will likely handle rather than the factory. There is a fundamental disconnect between the buyer and dealer on multiple levels. Research TrueCar dug up serves to illustrate three facets of the problem: lack of transparency, poor or inconsistent retail experience and anxiety.
