Discussions to begin with wider number of departments over common needs to inform latest component of Government as a Platform strategy The Government Digital Service (GDS) has said it is starting discovery work on a status tracking and notifications platform that will build on existing collaborations with a number of different departments. With discussions presently underway over the future structure of GDS once executive director Mike Bracken steps down next month, Peter Herlihy – a project manager with the organisation – said the proposed status tracking tool was being developed as one of several planned building blocks making up the Government as a Platform (GaaP) strategy.

MAPS.ME is a free offline maps and navigation application for iOS and Android that was first  launched as Maps With Me in 2010 and acquired by Mail.ru last November. Today, MAPS.ME launched its Walking Directions feature, that allows hikers as well as urban users to find the best way to reach their destination. According to founder Yury Melnichek, MAPS.ME is the best visualization application for mobile for open location data provided by OpenStreetMap, a crowd-sourced map service. The company claims that in some areas MAPS, ME is more accurate than Google maps, specifically for trails in remote locations and for countries that are not on the internet giant’s priority list for mapping.

For a population health management strategy to be effective, vast amounts of data needs to be shared between large numbers of systems. It’s only when this sharing is effectively achieved that the promised benefits will be realised. The data in question is collected and held by a range of organisations. They include primary care providers, specialists, hospitals and government departments. Pooling this data as part of a population health management strategy allows sophisticated analysis and risk modelling that, in turn, can drive healthcare provision in new and exciting ways. However this analysis is only ever as good as the quality of the underlying data. If that’s not complete, normalised and accurate, the resulting decisions will be flawed.

The uniformly low voter turnout across wards in Bengaluru raises three questions over and above the well-recognised issue of voter apathy.One, is voter apathy a reality or is it due to poor voter list management, resulting in an incomplete and erroneous list?Two, if voter apathy is real, then is the SEC doing enough to raise voter turnout? If voter apathy is a fallacy, then is the ECISEC prioritising reforms to voter list management in Bengaluru?Three, do we only focus on voter turnout as a measure of citizen engagement and simply wait for a higher voter turnout in the next elections?The quality of Bengaluru’s voter list and the quality of voter list management is not beyond reasonable doubt.Therefore one is not sure if voter apathy is real or a result of poor voter list management.

The city of Richmond, Va., recently unveiled an open data portal that gives people access to important data that had long languished in dark corners of its website. Everything from crime data to property records are easily searchable and downloadable, with all sorts of charts and datasets ready to grab. That all sounds fantastic, and it is. More cities, especially mid-size cities like Richmond, should be getting on board with the open data movement. But as a journalist who has now seen two small cities (see Somerville, Mass.) embrace this kind of transparency while ignoring others, it’s important that we remind government officials that open data is not a replacement for following the letter and spirit of freedom of information laws.

GDS executive director stresses department’s “deep-rooted culture change”, shifting Defra’s focus to be open by default Government Digital Service (GDS) executive director Mike Bracken has paid tribute to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and its work opening up data. In a blog post , Bracken discussed the range of data Defra collects and argued that the department has realised that its future depends on being a more data-driven organisation. “Defra is focusing its efforts on thinking about data first. The open data project has begun with an accelerator programme, designed to get at least 8,000 separate data sets out into the public domain within a single year,” said Bracken. “Defra has a lot of data.

The cool thing about Twitter is that most of the things posted on it are public. You can see what anyone is thinking about, whether they’re friends you know IRL, celebrities, or professionals you admire. But this quality isn’t just a “cool thing,” it’s … the whole point of Twitter, a fact that Twitter has possibly forgotten. On Friday night, Twitter blocked 31 accounts owned by the Open State Foundation (a digital transparency group) that logged deleted tweets from politicians and diplomats around the world. We already knew that Twitter didn’t take fondly to these types of accounts, because it removed the Sunlight Foundation’s Politwoops U.S. account (which monitored the gaffs and revisions of American politicians) in June.
