NAIROBI: It has been four years since former President Mwai Kibaki launched Kenya’s open data portal, making public data that was once held closely by Government agencies and ministries. The launch of the Kenya Open Data Initiative (Kodi) saw the country become the first in sub-Saharan Africa to liberate official government data. This elevated Kenya’s profile in the continent as a technology powerhouse. In the four years it has been active, the portal has recorded 44 million page views, and over half a million downloads and embeds of data on users’ websites.

New York City officials are out touting an update to its Census FactFinder, saying that the latest changes improves upon the effort started under former Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s administration to make city data open and accessible to the masses. According to Department of City Planning director Joseph Salvo, the newly revamped site is an attempt to meet public demand for data that has increased dramatically in recent years. While local government still accounts for the bulk of requests, businesses, community organizations, and others have been asking for information, Salvo told the Wall Street Journal. The site lets any user pull up and sort through hyperlocal data, which in turn can inform organizations’ next steps. For example, the WSJ pointed to the Charles B.

Earlier this month, the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts sued the Boston Police Department, demanding that they turn over recent years’ data on police stops to address concerns that people of color are being overpoliced in the city. “It’s true that we already know enough to implement serious reform,” emails Matthew R. Segal, legal director at the Massachusetts ACLU. “But it’s equally true that police departments and public officials can be resistant to reform, and getting more current data could help to overcome that resistance.” A dearth of data on police conduct has drawn heightened criticism amid nationwide protests against abuse and use of force, particularly against black people.

Growing skepticism in reaction to the endless hype about the Internet of Things has spawned yet another IoT forecast that actually embraces the hoopla by concluding that the “hype may actually understate the full potential of the Internet of Things.” Not usually given to hyperbole, the staid management consultant McKinsey & Co. attributes that assertion to several key findings centered on leveraging the massive amounts of data expected to be generated by the IoT: “Most of the IoT data collected today are not used at all, and data that are used are not fully exploited,” concludes a McKinsey study on the IoT released earlier this summer. For example, the study by the McKinsey Global Institute found that “only 1 percent of data from an oil rig with 30,000 sensors is examined.

One of China’s biggest box office surprises in recent years was Tiny Times, a 2013 film which took in US$11.9 million in the box office on its first day alone and spawned a series of sequels. Yet this movie was as much a result of market research and data analysis as it was artistry. The filmmakers tapped into Chinese social media networks to help determine the stars, director and marketing campaign that would most appeal to China’s younger generation. And the payout for this research was substantial. This is one original example of the use of big data in China. Big data is an often vague term that means harnessing the huge amount of information that is created through online activities and transactions to discover trends and make predictions.

The Singapore facility will become operational in September. The Singapore facility is the second overseas data centre to be opened this year by Aliyun, as the business unit expands internationally. Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba announced Wednesday that it is setting up a new data center in Singapore. In addition to being the location of Aliyun’s seventh cloud data center, Singapore will serve as headquarters for the company’s rapidly expanding worldwide operations. When asked how pivotal a role the Singapore headquarters would play in Aliyun achieving that goal, Yu said: “I would not comment about how long we will take to catch up, but we will definitely take sooner than three or four years to learn the needs of our customers and create value for them”.
