Abu Dhabi: Simple tasks such as measuring the level of noise and taking pictures of Nature in Abu Dhabi are some of the ways that individuals can collectively work towards environmental sustainability, experts in the capital said today (Tuesday). Speaking during the second edition of the Eye on Earth Summit 2015, specialists agreed that the planet is fragile and intrinsically in danger. This year’s summit’s primary focus is on the need for open data on environment which officials revealed is often kept private due to political and financial reasons.

This is especially true for those in governments around the world tasked with promoting open data, data that anyone can access, use and share. “Open data leaders often need to address very real fears from their colleagues and bosses,” said Emma Truswell, services business manager at the Open Data Institute. “These include national security, privacy concerns, the risk of embarrassment to the administration, and concerns about the quality of data.” But they take these risks for good reason.

Researchers estimate the world is losing species at 1,000 times the natural background rate. It’s a huge conservation issue, and one that’s difficult to track. Duke University, SAS Institute, the North Carolina Zoological Park and other entities, however, have teamed up to analyze the problem, documenting and reviewing the current technologies used to monitor species across the globe. Part of that work, published in a recent paper, includes figuring out the challenges and limitations of the technologies, such as the fact that invasive techniques that rely on capture and immobilization of animals for tagging purposes, can “negatively impact species,” explains Zoe Jewell, adjunct associate professor at Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment.

Reading through the Liberal platform released Monday, it’s almost as if Justin Trudeau got a hold of a checklist that convention-weary Canadians have been crafting for years somewhere in earnest, just waiting for the day that a party — or a leader — with some cojones would take the reins and enact real policy changes. Electoral reform? Check. The Liberals will “convene a committee to review a wide variety of reforms, such as ranked ballots, proportional representation, mandatory voting, and online voting,” and introduce new legislation within 18 months of forming government. Expense disclosure? Check. “All Parliamentarians [will be required] to disclose their expenses in a common and detailed manner, each quarter,” according to the platform. Parliamentary transparency? University project sets out to build open datastore for UK councils Initiative aims to make life easier for new users or those with limited analytical resources The Geographic Data Science lab at the University of Liverpool is building an open datastore for every local authority in the UK. The initiative, detailed in a blog post , got underway earlier summer, backed by the ESRC Consumer Data Research Centre. The blog explains that using open data can be challenging, especially for new users or those with limited analytical resources. The blog post says, “It can be difficult to find what data are available, the formats can be confusing (or in some cases not that open!), and an advanced level of software skill may be required for their analysis.

The national economy is finally showing signs of recovery: Unemployment rates are falling, and the stock market is bouncing back. Despite these good signs, at least 22 states still project budget shortfalls for the upcoming fiscal year. Due to stagnant and declining tax revenues, fluctuating job creation, rising pension and health-care costs, and a lack of financial reserves, state and local governments are struggling to balance their budgets. If this problem isn’t solved soon, citizens are likely to see cuts in public services ; government employees will lose their jobs or benefits; there will be less money devoted to institutions such as military bases, public school programs and health-care clinics; and it’s only a matter of time before we see increased taxes.
