Reading through the Liberal platform released Monday, it’s almost as if Justin Trudeau got a hold of a checklist that convention-weary Canadians have been crafting for years somewhere in earnest, just waiting for the day that a party — or a leader — with some cojones would take the reins and enact real policy changes. Electoral reform? Check. The Liberals will “convene a committee to review a wide variety of reforms, such as ranked ballots, proportional representation, mandatory voting, and online voting,” and introduce new legislation within 18 months of forming government. Expense disclosure? Check. “All Parliamentarians [will be required] to disclose their expenses in a common and detailed manner, each quarter,” according to the platform. Parliamentary transparency? Check.
