BERKELEY — The Berkeley Police Department has begun to post data on motor vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian stops online, in what it describes as a desire to be open and accountable to the community. “Collection of data can assist and contribute to the national policing discussion, focus our attention internally on implicit bias and increase trust by making policing in Berkeley more transparent to the community,” says a news release from the city. The data covers police contacts between Jan. 26 and Aug. 31. Information will be updated about every 60 days, according to the release. The raw information is available on the city’s Open Data Portal at www.cityofberkeley.info/opendata. Search for “stop data.” The posting of the information comes in the wake of a Sept.

It is part of an effort to increase transparency within police departments across the country, the department said in a news release. “The Fayetteville Police Department has made leaps and bounds to be more transparent with our actions and activities,” Chief Harold Medlock said in the announcement. The files contain summaries of individual crime reports and accident reports from 2012, 2013 and 2014. More datasets will be added as they come available, the department said. The files include the location, time, date and descriptions of each reported incident. It does not have the names of the victims, witnesses or others involved. People can examine this data and analyze to look for patterns in crime or wrecks.

C5 Alliance welcome the collaborative efforts of the Jersey tech community, displayed at the third HackJsy Hackathon, which took place at the Digital Jersey Hub between the 25th-27th September. The 36-hour event saw members of the digital community form teams to create solutions for the benefit of the digital health industry. C5 Alliance supported the event as members of MedTech.je, a new digital health consortium, made up of local experts in technology and health professionals, who sponsored the event, donating the grand first prize of £1000. C5 Alliance and MedTech.je team member, Paul Blampied, participated in the Hackathon, researching and presenting on the tools available in the area of open data, including the open source Jupyter platform for interactive data analysis.

TAIPEI — The Taipei City Government on Tuesday added theft crimes to its public online database in an effort to alert citizens, neighborhood watch groups and security guards to the incidence of such crimes in their areas. The database lists information contained in police reports on house burglaries and automobile and bicycle thefts in areas throughout the city. It is part of an open data platform set up September 2011 by the city government at http://data.taipei, in keeping with Mayor Ko Wen-je’s policy of creating a safety map for citizens and improving the living environment in the city, the Taipei Department of Information Technology said in a statement Tuesday.

The Center for Open Data Enterprise (CODE) is developing an interactive map to galvanize support for open data initiatives – and they need your contributions! Although it is not set to be officially launched until 2016, a beta version of The Open Data Impact Map is available online and already contains information from over 1000 organizations in 80 countries. Journalists who have worked with open data on behalf of a company, non-profit, or a developer group are encouraged to contribute to the map by taking a short survey on the CODE website. The survey is available in Spanish, French, Russian, German, Korean and Portuguese, as well as English, in the hope of facilitating a global understanding of the value derived from open data initiatives.

One of the first things I did after the earthquake on 25th April was to connect with my family through the internet as phone lines were then not available. Never before had I been so grateful to have internet access. The quakes in April and May claimed more than 9,000 lives and injured thousands. Million others are now homeless. Of the many ways the Nepalese community, international development organizations, and the Government initially supported the most affected, Internet and open data platforms played a major role. As info-hubs they provided updates for those in Nepal and elsewhere in the world and helped monitor post-disaster rescue and relief efforts.

Europe’s cities are getting smarter. It’s no longer enough to have clean streets and a passable metro; cities must now be able to have all that and use data to calculate consumption, resource usage and traffic management. The Digital Agenda for Europe (2010) highlighted the importance of more open data across the EU, which will be used to improve public services and create smarter cities across the continent. Dietman Offenhuber is an assistant professor at Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts, in the department of art, design and public policy. He describes a smart city as “an intelligent machine, which governs and adapts itself to its residents and environmental conditions”.

Dr. Kirk Borne is a data scientist and an astrophysicist. He is Principal Data Scientist in the Strategic Innovation Group at Booz-Allen Hamilton since 2015. He was Professor of Astrophysics and Computational Science in the George Mason University (GMU) School of Physics, Astronomy, and Computational Sciences during 2003-2015. He served as undergraduate advisor for the GMU Data Science program and graduate advisor to students in the Computational Science and Informatics PhD program. Prior to that, he spent nearly 20 years supporting NASA projects, including NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope as Data Archive Project Scientist, NASA’s Astronomy Data Center, and NASA’s Space Science Data Operations Office.
