Hampton Police launched an “open data portal” Friday that allows anyone to access various types of information on its website. The portal includes crime statistics, officer-involved shooting information, a community police event calendar, and incident and offense reports. The effort is a part of the Police Data Initiative, which falls in line with President Barack Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing, which is aimed at reducing crime and building public trust. The president’s task force was formed in December 2014 after several high-profile police shootings. Hampton Police Chief Terry Sult said the portal makes the department more transparent, adding that transparency is needed in good and bad times.

Jersey City officials Tuesday announced the launch of a revamped online portal that will provide residents easier access to public data. The new Jersey City Open Data Portal, which gives residents access to a wide range of information — from city budgets to maps of bike lanes — includes enhanced data mapping and visualization features, and what officials describe as a more advanced software platform. “Data has transformed how we think about everything from presidential elections to baseball,” Mayor Steve Fulop said in a statement. “We need to bring a data-driven approach to our cities, as well.

When it comes to big data, some agencies are beginning to have their “a-ha” moment. Agencies like the Health and Human Services Department and its Office of Inspector General are finding new uses for data and predictive analytics to weed out waste, fraud and abuse. This past summer, the department’s Medicare Fraud Strike Force finished the largest action ever against health care fraud. Since President Barack Obama announced his Open Data Policy in 2013,  organizations are beginning to gather and make that information available to the public. But even in a complicated budgetary climate, it’s what agencies do with that data, that makes an impact, said Caryl Brzymialkiewicz, assistant inspector general and chief data officer at HHS.

Innovate UK has launched a digital innovation programme, IC Tomorrow, to find solutions to the challenges around living in modern urban spaces. A contest to find innovative entrepreneurs with an interest urban planning is now underway – and four winners will eventually win £35,000 of funding each to put towards their winning ideas. They will also be given the opportunity to “collaborate with commercial partners to accelerate the development of their technologies”. There are four categories that make up the competition. They are: The winning entrepreneurs retain 100 per cent of their IP and will receive mentoring and promotion to help bring their solutions to market.

During GIS Ireland 2015, 2nd October, our Partner John O’Flaherty, from MAC, explained the attached presentation about Geospatial Linked Open Data for the GeoTechnology of the Future. The workshop addressed daily technological developments and changes, which could have significant ramifications with the Geographic Information (GI) and GeoTechnologies (GT) environments. Big Data, Linked Data, Internet of Things, Open Data, 3D/4D, inside/outside building positionings, UAVs, cloud computing, Artificial Reality and Intelligence, Networks of Networks, Ontologies, 5G etc are just some of the more specific areas within which this tsunami of change is occurring, all of which can and will impact on the GI/GT environment in the emerging future.

App developers, researchers, and sleuths could find a treasure trove to mine for free. On Thursday, the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, and the University of Pittsburgh unveiled the Western Pennsylvania Regional Data Center — an open data website with 133 sets of local data related to the arts, education, and demographics, among other topics. “The goal is to have as much information as possible in one place, accessible to everyone,” city spokeswoman Katie O’Malley told the Pittsburgh Business Times. According to O’Malley, the following information will be available on the site: O’Malley said information about 911 calls will not be publicly available through the launch, but is being considered for future. “This is just the start,” said O’Malley.

NEW DELHI: The government is devising ways to ramp up online dissemination of data and make more data available to public for free, an effort that is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India initiative.The ministry of statistics and programme implementation is in the process of drafting an agenda note in which it has differentiated between data that can and cannot be shared on its website, officials said. It is planning to make the “sharable data” available to everyone for free, in contrast to the current practice of charging a nominal fee for accessing data at the unit level, they said.At present, the government charges fees for providing data from the national sample surveys, Annual Survey of Industries and the economic census .

Alameda County CIO Tim DuPuis is in an interesting position.  His county is home to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and University of California Berkeley campus, while San Francisco and Silicon Valley are just across bay — so DuPuis rarely has to argue for the importance of IT and innovation in local government.  That same proximity, however, means county IT is held to a very high standard, making recruiting and retaining tech talent ridiculously difficult.  (DuPuis recently managed to hire an IT leader who was weighing a competing offer from NetFlix.) At the recent Public Technology Institute conference in Salt Lake City, DePuis spoke with GCN Editor-in-Chief Troy K. Schneider about the priorities and expectations for a CIO in such a high-tech county.
