Last week the ASHG annual meeting took place in the delightful home of crab cakes, Baltimore. Sam Rose reports on some of the highlights from this year’s conference. At BioMed Central we always look forward to attending the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) annual meeting. It’s the world’s largest genetics meeting, and now welcomes well over 6,000 delegates. This year in Baltimore ASHG certainly lived up to expectations by showcasing the hottest areas in human genetics. In addition to some excellent science, delegates were graced with a delightful (apologies in advance to keen ornithologists out there if I’m incorrect) house sparrow that lived in the conference centre and flew playfully around in talks to the amusement of the crowd. Government agencies are under pressure to make data more accessible to their own departments, as well as to the public. The move to make data more accessible is referred to as “open data,” namely ensuring that it is available to everyone to use freely, preferably via the Internet. This data can be reused and redistributed, including mixing the information with other data sets to draw additional conclusions. Therefore, noncommercial restrictions or restrictions on the use of data only for certain purposes — such as only in education — are not allowed. According to a 2013 report by the McKinsey Global Institute, open data has the potential to unlock anywhere between $3 trillion and $5 trillion annually in total economic value.

Governor Jerry Brown has cleared his desk of hundreds of bills sent to him by the Legislature. In total, the Governor signed 808 bills and vetoed 133 bills. Among the approved bills were victories that hold true to the values and legislative priorities of California Forward’s Partnership for Public Accountability. In order for democracy to work, it requires elected leaders to be responsive and representative, government decisions transparent, and voters empowered through an electoral process that holds officials accountable for results. Among this year’s wins were two bills that make significant progress for transparency in local governments by setting new standards for open data.

End Poverty Day tomorrow comes among heightened discussion about poverty’s causes, its measurement and what we can do to end it. The international extreme poverty line has been updated to $1.90/day, the recent Global Monitoring Report projects that the number of people living below this line will fall below 10% this year, and the Bank has just announced it’s stepping up efforts to boost data collection in the poorest countries, many of which suffer from “data deprivation”.

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) — Hampton Police will launch an open data portal as part of the White House Police Data Initiative. This initiative will allow citizens easy access to crime statistics, officer-involved shooting information and a wide range of other data frequently requested by the public. The initiative will start with about 20 law enforcement agencies nationwide. The division will frequently upload information to our website through an open data portal sponsored by the White House. It includes a searchable database that will provide law enforcement agencies, community groups, and most importantly, the public, easy access to multiple crime statistics.

The Hampton Division says it will now upload information to its website through an open data portal sponsored by the White House. Citizens will have access to crime statistics, officer-involved shooting information and other data. The user will be able to download, embed, save and filter the information. The Open Data Project is about crime and police operations in Hampton. It is about transparency and getting out as much information as possible. Hampton  Police Chief Terry Sult said, “But if we can put that information out there, preemptively, in a variety of ways — we are reducing costs, reducing staff time and creating legitimacy in our department.” Hampton is one of 21 law enforcement agencies nationwide selected to participate in this initiative.

On Wednesday, the Cook County Department of Budget and Management Services released the Executive Recommendations for the Fiscal Year 2016. As with previous years the Budget is available as a series of PDFs. As part of our work with Cook County Open Data we helped create and post three datasets as part of this year’s Executive Recommendation Budget release: With these dataset releases we made several improvements over last year’s Executive Recommended Budget release: Over the next several weeks there will be Departmental Reviews and Public Hearings on the Executive Recommendation Budget.
