Dubai: Dubai: The Dubai Data Law was launched on Saturday to allow the sharing of government data with the private sector, His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, posted on Twitter. “We issued today Dubai Data Law which will allow sharing [of] Government data with private sector for a better Smart City of Dubai,” Shaikh Mohammad tweeted on his account. The Dubai Data Law will create opportunities for collaboration, innovation and entrepreneurship between government and non-government entities, Shaikh Mohammad said.

Dubai: A new law issued on Saturday by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to allow sharing non-confidential government data with the private sector in order to complete the legislative framework for turning Dubai into a Smart City. The Dubai Data law will help create opportunities for collaboration, innovation and entrepreneurship between government and nongovernment entities, which would in turn increase the competitiveness of data providers on the local, regional and international levels. The new law will ensure that Dubai government departments’ non-confidential data will be accessible to researchers, investors, service developers via an integrated platform that enable o have access to these information.

Pittsburgh and Allegheny County leaders on Thursday touted a new online data resource they say will help drive decision-making on everything from road paving to sending extra police to violent areas. “We start today one of the greatest historic days of city-county consolidation: an understanding of an open-data platform to be able to do great things,” Mayor Bill Peduto said at a news conference in the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. Peduto joined County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and University of Pittsburgh officials in announcing the Western Pennsylvania Regional Data Center, a website that contains a wealth of public information previously stored across cumbersome bureaucratic silos or accessible only through time-consuming Right to Know requests.

The Indian government’s small steps are taking India towards digitalization at a good pace. With another move today, the government is cutting down the rates it previously charged for national sample surveys, annual survey of industries and the economic census. The applicants who filed for queries with the government, always had to pay a nominal fee, which would indeed get taxing for those from lower economic strata. Even to simply file an RTI, one cannot get through without passing a payment gateway. To ramp up this whole system, a change in the working was needed, and we’re glad that the Modi government is bringing it up. With the data becoming accessible for free, one can file various applications without having to be bothered of its weight on the pocket.

The Indian government is now planning to ramp up the online division and make more and more data available to the public for free.The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation is right now busy working on a note, which will have data that can and cannot be shared on the website. The Ministry is also planning to make the ‘sharable data’ available on the portal for free; earlier, the user had to pay a nominal fees to access it.Currently, the government charges fees for providing data related to its national sample surveys, annual survey of industries and the economic census. As reported in the Economic Times, some officials believe that the current practice is against the spirit of the open data policy.

Scientific consensus has been established on the veracity of global warming, and a greater need to observe, record and respond to its effects. As technology has progressed, so too has our ability to monitor the planet’s climate, with increasingly advanced satellites feeding data back to Earth. Though the results can often be depressing, their accuracy is vital to scientific research, the global economy and even our fundamental safety and existence. Earlier this week in the balmy surrounds of Cannes in the south of France, I got a chance to see first hand the latest European satellite that will help expand our knowledge on the health of the planet. Want to know the most popular dog names in Allegheny County? Maybe you need information about housing inspections, or to keep track of the report you made to the city’s 311 line about a pothole. All that information and much more is now readily available via the newly-launched Western Pennsylvania Regional Data Center. The open data portal has more than 130 sets of data from the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, all with the goal of making local government information as accessible to the public as possible. “Ultimately, we want this portal to be available and open to all municipalities so that data can be shared with all of our constituencies,” says Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald.
