New Yorkers now have a digital one-stop shop for navigating their neighborhood. The city launched neighborhood.nyc Wednesday with more than 400 specific domains for places like Bay Ridge, Astoria, the East Village and other areas in the five boroughs, that provide open data info in an easy-to-use webpage. Before, New Yorkers would have to visit the city’s open data portal or an agency website and do some detective work to find information on items like 311 complaints or street closures in their community. Accurate, up-to-date weather information is something we take for granted in the United States. When traveling abroad, one can’t help but observe that U.S. weather information is of higher quality and ubiquity relative to other countries. So why is that? The relative size of the U.S. in terms of population, gross domestic product and land mass with its associated wide variety of different types of weather hazards certainly is part of the answer. We have also benefited from federal investments in basic research. But in my opinion, it is the combination of a strong federal infrastructure with the National Weather Service at the forefront working in concert with a vibrant private sector. This public-private partnership is underpinned by the U.S.

The College Scorecard, an online tool to help families assess and compare colleges and universities in areas like cost, graduation rates and student debt, rolled out last month with new updates and more information. The scorecard is an Obama administration project that puts troves of federal data about American colleges and universities online in a searchable format. It has been scaled back from President Obama’s original promise of rating schools based on affordability and return on investment — a contrast to other private rankings that emphasize prestige and endowment size. The government site, while not really a ranking tool, does make it easy to find information on student outcomes — the bang for your education buck, in other words.

SALT LAKE CITY — With government employees increasingly eager to use their personal smartphones and tablets at the office, state and local IT leaders across the country are grappling with how to be effective gatekeepers for their networks. But responses to that dilemma have been across the board, IT execs said at a panel discussion at the National Association of State Chief Information Officers’ annual conference. In North Carolina, State Chief Information Risk Officer Maria Thompson said she’s revamped the state’s “bring your own device” policy, putting in place a set of more restrictive, “back to basics” guidelines for employees hoping to bring their own devices for use at work. “Just because you can connect it, doesn’t mean you should,” Thompson said.
