The Center for Open Science (COS) is simultaneously a mission-based non-profit and a tech start-up with the goal of providing free data. “Open data is so important because tons of money is used to get it,” but some research will not have the same view points. Therefore, a fresh perspective can provide new conclusions from the same set of data. The Center “provides a framework for users to share data,” said Brian Nosek, executive director of The Center for Open Science and professor at University of Virginia. “The values of science have always been about transparency,” Nosek remarked during an interview with John Furrier and Jeff Frick, co-hosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team.

Using satellites to predict plant and crop diseases is just one of the fresh ideas produced over a week-long camp dedicated to creating mobile apps using Earth observation data. Twenty-three developers from nine countries, representing Austria, Britain, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Poland and Spain , gathered last week at ESA’s ESRIN centre in Italy, for the fourth annual Space App Camp. Their aim was to bring Earth observation data – particularly from the European Copernicus programme – to the everyday user through smartphones. Each of the teams had a week to create an app from one of five areas: agriculture, emergency and rescue management, environmental protection, marine environments and maritime transportation, or lifestyle and tourism.

In a previous article on Circulate, we explored the question of the value and potential for open data to positively impact cities. For understandable reasons, there are concerns about opening up large data sets, but there is evidence that significant benefit can be gained for cities by allowing data to be utilised. One example of that is London-based travel app, Citymapper, which uses a wide-range of data to help commuters to get from one place to another in the easiest and most efficient way possible. Citymapper stands out among the many available travel and journey planning apps for the sheer abundance of information that it is able to provide.

Taipei, Oct. 13 (CNA) The Taipei City Government on Tuesday added theft crimes to its public online database in an effort to alert citizens, neighborhood watch groups and security guards to the incidence of such crimes in their areas. The database lists information contained in police reports on house burglaries and automobile and bicycle thefts in areas throughout the city. It is part of an open data platform set up September 2011 by the city government at http://data.taipei, in keeping with Mayor Ko Wen-je’s (柯文哲) policy of creating a safety map for citizens and improving the living environment in the city, the Taipei Department of Information Technology said in a statement Tuesday.

Two new open data-led artworks will now be developed for the Open Data Institute’s Data as Culture programme, by its artists in residence Thomson & Craighead and Natasha Caruana, thanks to £33,800 ‘Grants for the Arts’ funding supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Since the ODI’s inception in 2012, the Data as Culture programme has brought together diverse artists, commissioned works and public exhibitions. The programme explores new ways of thinking about open data – data that anyone can use and share – to audiences beyond the technology sector.

We’ve seen over $6.7 billion of venture capital flowing into the New York City area over the last four quarters alone, contributing to what’s already a $125 billion tech economy. Nearly 300,000 New Yorkers work in the innovation economy, with employment growing faster—at 7.6 percent per year—than in almost any other sector. This tech ecosystem has had tremendous City support.

The University of Edinburgh has announced plans to gather a team of students for web editing. The team, led by a paid ‘Wikimedian in Residence’ or WiR, is to consist of Wikipedia  editors who will help facilitate entries on the website associated with the institution, according to the University. The University hopes to connect members of the institution to the wider Wikipedia community of academic writers and researchers. The overall aim of group is to develop students’ digital skills and engage them in a more open-sourced, information-sharing environment. The initiative is largely unprecedented. Whilst a WiR program currently exists at the National Museums of Scotland, the University of Edinburgh is one of the first universities to advertise for one of its own.
