Data collection and analysis are at the core of modern research, and often take months or even years during which researchers remain uncredited for their contribution. A new plugin to a workflow previously developed by the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and Pensoft, and tested with datasets shared through GBIF and DataONE, now makes it possible to convert metadata into a manuscript for scholarly publications, with a click of a button. Pensoft has currently implemented the feature for biodiversity, ecological and environmental data.

The Atlanta Police Department has launched a new crime data portal. The portal is part of the city’s response to President Barack Obama’s 21st Century Policing Initiative. With the launch, Atlanta joins a growing list of cities that are providing more crime statistics and information out to the public. Earlier this year, the White House announced the Police Open Data Initiative which came out of the recommendations provided by the Task Force on 21st Century Policing. The goal of both projects is to improve community relations between the police and citizens. The open data project is aimed at helping police departments rely more heavily on data-driven decision making. The Atlanta Police Department portal will provide information on the most commonly requested “Part 1” crimes.

Jersey City officials announced today the launch of a revamped online portal that will provide residents easier access to public data. The new Jersey City Open Data Portal, which gives residents access to a wide range of information — from city budgets to maps of bike lanes — includes enhanced data mapping and visualization features, and what officials describe is a more advanced software platform. “Data has transformed how we think about everything from presidential elections to baseball,” Mayor Steve Fulop said in a statement. “We need to bring a data-driven approach to our cities, as well.

But the way this information is captured differs from place to place as their databases were initially designed to meet local needs or to comply with proprietary system designs. Hence, much local data is still fragmented and inconsistent, and much of it is published in isolation of the context in which it was created, so making sense of it in real life terms is a challenge.

The Arctic is heating up, both literally and geopolitically. Climate models point to melting sea ice in the coming decades, opening up new shipping routes, potentially vast new oil and gas reserves, and plenty of opportunity for international conflict. All that has prompted a flurry of activity at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, the mapmaking organization for the US military and intelligence community. Naturally, most of the maps made by the NGA aren’t for the likes of you—unless, of course, you’re a spy or a military officer with high-level security clearance. But not all of them. The agency recently released a slew of unclassified maps and geospatial data for the Arctic region, including some of the most detailed terrain maps of Alaska available to the general public.

If you haven’t heard of 18F, it’s time to get them on your radar. 18F is a digital consultancy in an independent agency, a startup within the General Services Administration (GSA), and a major advocate for open source and open data. I’ve been watching and learning more about this group since shortly after its inception in March 2014. When I saw Kaitlin Devine on the speaker list for All Things Open (happening in Raleigh, North Carolina October 19-20), I immediately reached out for an interview. Kaitlin is the engineering director as well as a Python developer at 18F. In this interview, she shares a few open source success stories from her time with the agency, open source tools that are helping to break down the silos of open data, and much more.
