The Atlanta Police Department has launched a new crime data portal. The portal is part of the city’s response to President Barack Obama’s 21st Century Policing Initiative. With the launch, Atlanta joins a growing list of cities that are providing more crime statistics and information out to the public. Earlier this year, the White House announced the Police Open Data Initiative which came out of the recommendations provided by the Task Force on 21st Century Policing. The goal of both projects is to improve community relations between the police and citizens. The open data project is aimed at helping police departments rely more heavily on data-driven decision making. The Atlanta Police Department portal will provide information on the most commonly requested “Part 1” crimes.
